Blue Screen Problem - Vista x64

    I've had a few blue screens lately.

    I've tried error checking the C: drive - both system errors and bad sectors. I've also defragged it more than once.

    Here is the fault report from the most recent blue screen. This appeared after I shut down and restarted the computer. I got the usual "Your computer has recovered from a..." message and this report....

    My computer has three internal drives. The C: drive and two others that I use for files.

    Could be anything really but next would be to run tests on the RAM,:

    Also if you hit the start button

    Right Click on Computer and select properties.
    Goto Advanced System Settings
    Under the advanced tab hit Settings under the Startup and Recovery section.

    Uncheck the automaticly restart option, if the BSOD happens again take a pic of it and post?

    I've had a look at memtest.org. There's a mind-boggling choice of downloads - I think! :confused:

    Which one should I download?

    Secondly, if I uncheck the automatically restart option, what happens in the event of a problem? Just wondering what the process is before I commit to it.

    when you do this, your computer will stop on the blue screen and not restart so it will give you time to write down the proper error code.

    Just curious, did you do an SFC /SCANNOW ? if not give it a shot. Also update your graphics card driver incase that is causing the bsod. Also what is the make of you're computer ? dell/Packard bell etc etc..
    just got a message that its recycle bin is corrupted!

    Click the windows start button then click all programs then click accessories and then right click command prompt and click run as administrator. Type in SFC /SCANNOW remember there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash and hit enter.

    I ran sfc /scannow this morning. At the end it said, "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.log....... For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log"

    After shutting down and rebooting, I got one of those " a disk check has been scheduled.(or words to that effect) a disk needs to be checked for consistency..." messages. I tapped a key to prevent it from happening. The drive mentioned is not the C: drive, but another internal drive. (I have three internal drives).

    1. The problems with the C: drive now appear to be sorted.

    2. Would scannow have been run only on my C: drive? If so, I may need to sort out this other drive. (I had already run Right Click/Tools/Check on this drive)

    3. If scannow only ran on my C: drive, can it be made to run on the other drive?

    Open Start menu:

    In Search Box type cmd.exe hit enter.
    On Command Prompt enter:

    Chkdsk D:\ (drive letter you need) /f /r

    It should run the next time you restart.

    It would be wise to do the chkdsk for your c drive too though

    Thanks for the reply.

    I'm running the Windows Check on that drive now (Right Click/Properties/Tools/Check and then clicking both boxes). Is that the same thing as what you describe above?

    Secondly, is sfc scannow a more thorough type of check? The reason I ask is that I had run Right Click/Properties/Tools...etc... on the C: drive twice and still had the blue screen.

    What you did is similar, however it might not be able access files while they are in use this is why windows tries to do those scans on boot before anything has loaded.

    SFC = System File Check mean more system files, what you describes sounds like the hard drive might have some bad sectors on it which when it tries to read is causing the BSOD.

    Check the hard disk with a decent low level diagnostics tool like vivard, you can get on the ubcd. A faulty HD can cause such problems

    All seems OK with the C: drive now. (no blue screen)

    However, I am stuck in a Check Disk loop with one of the other internal HDs.

    Every time I boot up I get a black screen saying that a Disk Check has been scheduled. I tap any key and stop it and the computer starts ok.

    However, if I let it run, after it has finished (about 1.5 - 2 hours!) it starts again automatically.

    Any idea how I can fix this?

    Chkdsk can be useless, try Vivard on the UBCD I linked to above, sounds to me like indeed one of your disk drives is the culprit

    Sorted.........I hope!

    I booted the computer in Safe mode and ran Chkdsk on the culprit drive from there. (For some reason, I didn't have to reboot to start the operation.)

    It took far longer than it had been taking when it was stuck in a loop.

    But, at the end it said that there were no problems found. So, maybe the loop problem was the OS?

    Anyway, starting and shutting down fine now.

    ps. Yoyo, had a look at Vivard. I found the website too 'busy' and too techie for me. But, I appreciate your time and effort. ;-)
