Are 10K still popular?

Fair play to all running half and full marathons. It's great the effort people put in. Being more a football and soccer player, 5-a-sides, indoor and astro that is, with the start and stop running of the game, running has never interested be a great deal.

I've have taken an interest in recent weeks however and plan to run a 10K race soon. Have 10K's lessoned as a racing option for casual runners?

For me personally, it seems a decent distance to get involved with running. Maybe if I run a few races at that distance I might consider half-marathons in a few months time but for now I'm happy enough with the timescale needed for 10K running. I'd consider myself fit form soccer but running consistently has taken time to get used to. Thankfully I came across a good 10 week training schedule which has made running enjoyable. I started off with a few 2 mile runs in the first few weeks and gradually ran more miles. Running has become a bit infectious in recent weeks which is a good thing. I'd hate to be running for the sake of it where it would become more like a chore.

For people who are considering taking up running either being involved in other sports or people look to gain fitness after being what they might call inactive for a while, I'd encourage them to research training schedules for 10K's and get out running, hopefully it'll be for them and get them on the right track for other challenges!

There are a lot of marathon and ultra distance specialists posting on here so it might seem that the 10k is not discussed enough but 10k is still probably still one of the most popular distances ran in Ireland. For the newbie it's a good step up and challenge from a 5k and involves a lot more endurance. For the more experienced runner the 10k is a real challenge, it requires a careful blend of speed and endurance, if you are lacking in either one you won't run good 10ks. Personally I think it is a great distance, I love training for them and doing specific 10k workouts but they can be a toughie to race and can take a few attempts to find your best strategy when it comes to racing them. Proper 10k training will also help you seriously improve all you're other distances form 5k to marathon.

Sure one of the biggest races (entry wise) in Ireland is a 10k. It is definetely a very popular distance.

Sure what are you talking about? 10k is a great race. Loads of fans on here, which means whatever rumours of its demise you might have heard are not on the mark.

Any details about the Finglas 10k? Looking for a 10k to run in the next few weeks and Finglas would be quite handy. Haven't heard about that race.

Took in a 10K race at the weekend. Enjoyed it. First time taking part in a race in years. Generally involved in football. I hope to take in a few more races before the end of the year. I was running to a basic training schedule so was happy enough to average 8 minute miles in the race.

Loads of 10k's everywhere, I'd be surprised if it's not the most common road race distance. But that will be part of the reason that they might not appear to be talked about so much on here, because we are doing them every week.

It's not to do with on here really that I was asking. In my experience of training for a 10K lately, most regular runners seem to give consideration to longers distances as if 10K is a stepping stone. I suppose it is in someways for people working to longer distances but I for one like the challenge of 10K and as pconn062 said: For the more experienced runner the 10k is a real challenge, it requires a careful blend of speed and endurance, if you are lacking in either one you won't run good 10ks. I've found that challenge in my experience of it and want to get it right! :)
