Some interesting statistics from yesterday's ISC report on sports participation...

'Running' is now the third most popular sport participated in. ('Exercise' is top - mainly gym membership, 7% say they've visited a gym in the last 7 days)

But it has one of the lowest club membership rates of the listed sports, with just one in ten runners being club members.

Is there much difference in the report that was launched yesterday and the one 2 years ago?

    Exercise is now a sport?

With swimming, are they counting kids splashing about in the shallow end?

They already count golf, so it's a low bar to clear :)

To avoid any confusion and unnecessary debate, attached is a copy of the questionnaire that has been used on the Irish Sports Monitor.

The definition of "sport" is deliberately broad and defined within the question wording as:
I would now like to ask you about any OTHER physical activities you undertook in the past 7 days for exercise, recreation or sport. Please DO NOT include physical activity for work, transport, or domestic work like gardening or DIY.
Please DO include personal exercise, such as swimming, dancing or jogging, as well as all forms of sporting activity, indoor or outdoor, whether undertaken in an organised setting or casually with family or friends. So, in the past 7 days, did you participate in any such activities?

The "other" refers to the exclusion of recreational walking which is asked about in a previous question.

In terms of the category "Exercise" - this is a combination of various activities, the vast bulk of which are gym related activities.

Some of you know my role in this, so am happy to provide clarifications as necessary.
