A HP netbook was auto-filling the password field at the login prompt. I could see the characters (asterisks) being entered. I deleted them one by one and counted over a hundred. When I the the password it logged in fine.

I set the machine to auto-login in the registry and this worked fine. The problem is still there though and happens after login. When I click on the start button the search box auto-fills with hash (#) signs. This only happens once.

The machine is clean after using Malwaye Bytes, CCleaner and MSE.

    Any ideas?

I installed some Windows updates including a touchpad driver. The problem hasn't happened now for a few reboots.
