Employer obligations?

    Situation: an employee has been let go from their job with no warning & given no notice or payment in lieu.

    Question: Is there any legal obligation on the employer to provide a letter stating the reason for dismissal if asked to do so by the (ex)employee, say for Social Welfare reasons?

    It depends on different factors for example, how long was the person employed - legislation defines employees rights - Citizens Information can give detailed information in this area.

    Was the contract of employment for a fixed term ?

    Permanent contract, not fixed term. The employment was 2 years on a back-to-work scheme then permanent contract since Oct. Unfair dismissal cases start from 12 months according to CIC...
