my boyfriend is looking to do an apprenticeship as a mechanic (previously done an apprenticeship in plumbing but sure its no use to him at the min!) - just wondering if you are 28 are there any grants/allowances that you can get? we have a mortgage to pay. In the long run we know it will pay off doing this but we need to try gauge how difficult it will be in the first couple of years. he has an app with FAS next week but if anyone had any advice ahead of that...much appreciated!

All I know is the motor trade is on its knees at the moment and dealers are closing every week which would suggest opportunities may not be easy to come by.
The lads on the Motors Forum would probably be able to offer advice on actually getting a position somewhere.

To my knowledge there aren't any special allowances payable to an apprentice because of their age , perhaps someone knows different ?

I know a number of people who done apprenticeships in their late 20's, early 30's and they didn't get any additional income/grants from the Gov or Fas etc...

It is just the wages from the employer while on the work based training blocks and then while on the collage based blocks it is:

    Phase 2 €195.25
    Phase 4 €293.17
    Phase 6 €439.75
    4th Year €527.70

Things may have changed in recent years with fewer employers in a position to take on apprentices or continue to employ them for the full duration of the apprenticeship.
    Contact Fas is my advice.

The amount of apprentices i know in all fields who are 28 and over and still not qualified is unreal, its such a dangerous route to take, you become unemployed as a 3rd or 4th year its damn near impossible to find work, your too expensive as an apprentice and for a few euro more a fully qualified lad can be hired,
College or further education might be a better route, with his qualification certain courses would admit him free of charge, and there's much much more financial incentives and whatnot available for him and the family.. Best of Luck:)
