Pal of mine off 8 shot one over in the medal at the weekend, 74, his best ever round I reckon. Back markers, heavy ground. Great score. Won the medal by three shots - but disqualified coz he didn't sign in properly for the comp! Disaster.

Worst bad luck I had in a comp was playing off the wrong markers and missing a prize because of the resulting penalty. Doesn't come close to blowing a medal though.

That's a super score alright and would be absolutely sick if it had happened to me. How do you mean he didn't sign in properly for the competition? Did he pay the competition entrance fee and return a fully signed up card or was the issue regarding signing into the computer? If the competition card was correct and there was an issue in terms of signing into the computer then he shouldn't be disqualified, card is king in such circumstances as far as I'm aware.

Personally I've never actually been disqualified from a competition or received penalty strokes for wrong tee boxes etc so I think I'm lucky in that regard. I have stopped playing partners from teeing off from the wrong tee boxes before alright so hopefully that positive karma is what's saved me to date.

Our medals are played over Sat and Sun, with the vast majority of members playing on the Sun. Shot a 65 nett (off 7) in the May medal on the Saturday morning (which would usually be enough to win). Pissed rain all that afternoon and night. Course was waterlogged on the Sunday and the medal was cancelled:(. Worst part was they didn't run a comp for those who played on the Sat so I didn't even get a cut!

    Haven't been talking to him since weekend but it was recorded as a disqualification on Howdidido in the following way;

Mr Joe Bloggs (save his reputation) 74-8 = 66 Disqualified-not signed in

Not sure what the actual issue was. Must check it out.

He should still get a cut though.

Aye, he's down to 7 now. In the normal scheme of things I imagine he'd be happy enough with that alone but the medal comps are prestigious enough to be tossing away.

Weird, our medals are run sort of like that but appear on howdidido as 2 seperate comps before overall comp is merged.

For instance CSS on a Sat could be 74 while on Sunday could be 72 depending on wind etc.

Well had no luck last w/end a bogey on 18 would have given me a 67 - drive a bit right decide to be sensible wedge down bounces very right end up being half blocked by tree hit that tree walk off with an 8 :(

RE. Playing off the wrong tee box.

I played my first comp a few weeks ago with a friend who was also playing his first comp. We were both a bit nervous and there was was a few people from the next couple of groups hanging around. Anyway, I stepped up and teed off. Walked away to let my playing partner tee off and noticed 3 lads looking and whispering. Mate walked up and teed off. No sooner had the ball left his club than the leader of this delightful little threesome decided to tell me that we had teed off from the wrong box (it's a 9 hole course). So a 2-shot penalty immediately.

I'm aware it was our mistake and lesson definitely learnt but what an a**hole. Stood there the whole time but was only too glad to tell us as soon as we had hit. Ah well, all is fair in love and golf.

    Yeah, that feckin tree!

If you are laying up on that hole aim for the 2nd green. Even if you are in the rough its a much easier shot than trying to hit it over the bridge but under the tree!

Hit a long iron into the green on the 14th in Castlewarden today accept i completely toed it off out right, miles right, straight towards the greenkeepers yard. Boom i heard as it hit the green iron roof shed. Oh ****e i thought as im sure anyone in the vicinity would be out looking to see who the arsehole is. Dropped a ball and hit another in. Grand. On the way up i said id throw my head in to see if anyone was over there split open. What do i find on the way? My ball bounced well back in play lying lovely ready to be hit up and down for par.

Iv hit trees and bounced back nice in the past but that took the biscuit!!

there's power lines about 100 yards out from the first at my club, played the medal on Sunday, skied a drive and it hit the wires, pinged off them and landed middle of fairway a bit short but i thought i had the option to play the ball from there, my playing partners said nope - hit again, no penalty (this is actually the local rule)

second shot - unreal hit the wires again

reload - hook the ball into the trees - and ended up with double bogey, was ticked off with not being allowed to use my first drive

my 3 playing partners and the 3 ball waiting were just stunned at how the hell i managed to hit the wires twice with my first two swings - and probably silently thinking how on earth after two free drives i messed up my 3rd attempt

Okay lads, I'm back with another bad luck story! This happened yesterday in our Captain's Prize at Black Bush. Place was playing very long and soft so 69 (par is 73) was leading by three going into the last 9.

One guy, playing off 18, had a 17 on the par 5 3rd and finished with a nett 80. It was his first hole in a shotgun start and he put his first four drives out of bounds. If he'd bogeyed the hole he'd have been joint leader. A par would have put him clear on his own. His surname wasn't Van de Velde.

As me auld lad always answers when asked how he managed to score an eight or a nine at a particular hole - 'By holing a great putt'. 17 does take the biscuit all right though.

I had a 10 on the last hole before and still won a stroke competiton by one. Lost 2 shots and people still accuse me of pullin up!

Jees that's rough but that's the beauty/distraught of strokeplay, one hole can really destroy a card. It's easily done too, my worst score ever was during the final few holes of a monthly medal when I was scoring well and took a 12 on a par 3, put 4 balls OB with the help of a strong cross wind but it was bad golf rather than bad luck.

Here's a case for having a friend 'on the bag'.

The guy's head was obviously melted, so a 'caddie' could have talked him into hitting something smaller off the tee, assuming that was an option.

If it's the same guy (MH???) he forgot to sign into the competitions book in the pro shop upon starting his round. This is a requirement under the competitions rules for BlackBush.

Aye, same guy all right. Pity, it was a great round. Anyway, he made up for it at the weekend. Not sure if the lad with the 17 will ever get over it tho.
