Remote Access Advice

    Hi,

I will be heading away to S.America for 3 months soon and while I am away I have no doubt - my parents will have a couple of issues with the house computer (PC) and won't have a clue how to fix whatever it is.

So is there any free and easy to use program which would allow me to access their computer from another continent and fix whatever issue it may be?

    Thanks in advance

    http://www.teamviewer.com/

Used it a few times and works great. Easy to set up and use too.

Thanks, is there much difference between the two or are they basically the same?

Basically the same. Although with Team Viewer you'll have a file browser to copy over files from your pc to theirs.

Logmein (forces) you to use a trial of the pro version (which is awesome) but then reverts back after a while (can't remember the time frame) and with that you can't copy over files. There are other ways though (by uploading files to google drive or dropbox and downloading them on the pc you're remoting to).

I had to do this for some of my family too.. It can be painful to be the on call IT guy for a family, especially when you are on the other side of the world.

I just used Skype which allows Screen Sharing (But you do not control their pc) and talked them through what to do.

I don't think this is as good a suggestion as the others but it may be a handy fall back

+1 for teamviewer. Use it the whole time myself. Haven't used logmein in years so can't really comment on it. Didn't like it much back then.

Teamviewer no doubt, its much better as they give it to home users for free with full functionality, you also are able to get and android app you can log in with (possibly fruit branded too).

I use Microsoft windows live - mesh. It's free and does the job perfectly.

After using both as a trial , I opted for teamviewer for personal use (free) , and have been using it now for the past 2 year hassle free. When setup correctly , the other party only has to be online for you to take control of desktop, no ID or password required .
    Cheers

(works on iPad,iPhone and android )

find teamviewer faster than logmein. Also if you use the Teamviewer HOST you can connect without any codes been entered its a great job!

Mesh is pretty good alright, but has two major drawbacks.

    1. Much slower install than Teamviewer

    2. Fails pathetically through a proxy.
