Parnell St to Drogheda

I have to drive to Drogheda this evening and back in the morning. I'll be leaving Parnell St some time between 5:45 and 6:00pm. Any tips on the best route or where to avoid? I'm assuming that once I'm past the Skerries/Rush exit on the M1 that it's plain sailing. I also need to be back in Dublin for 8:30/8:45 in the morning. Tips for that trip would be appreciated too.

Traffic is going to be cr*p between Lower/Upper Drumcondra Rd, Swords Rd to M1. Once on M1, there might be some delay closer to Airport to Swords exit due to the road works and three lanes to two lane transition. After that you are flying. Or Port tunnel might save you 15 mins.

I don't know if there's better way where you can avoid all this - I don't know how the N2 traffic compares, but if that's better, you could go up that way, N2/M2, and take R152 north of Ashbourne, but it's longer and probably slower than M1.

I might go via Slane this evening actually. Thanks.

If you go the n2 route there is no need to deal with Slane. Take the Duleek/Drogheda R152 road at Kilmoon, much more direct.

Cheers for the tips guys. I heard there were two accidents on the M1 which caused major tailbacks. I made it an hour each way going via Slane (I was actually going to the Slane side of Drogheda). Bottlenecks were between Glasnevin and Finglas and at Primatestown.

It was very wise of you to take N2.

I was thinking about this thread while riding on M1 around 5:45 last evening. M1 was bumper to bumper going about 30 kmps from port tunnel all the way to Naul exit. Accidents in part, but the real reason was a storm cell that dumped hailstones and rained so hard, there was about 2 inches of surface water all the way between Swords exit and Naul Exit. It was the worst driving conditions I have ever experienced, bar a fog last year (where I could hear but not see traffic on the opposite lane, just meters away!!)

    I wouldn't be complaining about Mach 10 mate. ;)

Yeah, my sister got stuck on the M1 coming back from Malahide for over an hour I think. There was a storm on the N2 as well but traffic was still pretty fluid. These two drives again reminded me of the ineptitude of many people. Driving along in a storm with no lights yesterday evening and sitting in steady traffic with front and rear fogs today. Plus ca change.:) I don't think I could commute by car every day.

Well, emm, technically speaking, M1 is actually doing approximately 30 kmps (source) when you consider earth's wobble, spin and orbit around Sun!!
