I know of about 2000 farmers in Wicklow looking for people to shoot rabbits. If you call to 10 farms I reckon 6 would say shoot away, it's in their interest after all. just go for a drive some evening and if you see loads of rabbits in a field call to the two nearest houses and one of them will say yes :-)

ah ye no bother doing that, the rebels on sky news are always doing it. but it's recommended to be on the back of a pick up and have your mates screaming 'yayayayayaya'

Can't shoot up in air with a rifle!

Can't or shouldn't under any circumstances due to there being no safe backstop, and the absolutely stupidity of it.

Asking farmers directly is best way to get permission. And make sure to get it in writing. Have a simple pre printed letter (CliveJ) had a perfect sample few years back that a farmer just needs to sign date and fill in address. If no farmers are giving you permission there is probably a reason for it.

You will gain a lot of information from this section - spend the time to read them.

What we mean to say is mate if you plan to hunt with a gun and then get the gun askin where to shoot then on a forum isn't a question you should ever be askin
It all should've been done before gettin the gun mate
It's not a dig but ya need to think things through before gettin a weapon that'll be used to hunt

Lads, if you're not going to help the OP, and only want to stir, after hours is over that way and I'm sure your unique and insightful brand of humour will be the toast of the forum over there. Posts deleted.

I started shooting last year when a friend introduced me in to his gun club after that day I was hooked joined the next week so we all have to start some were not all us know farmers or own our own land and as for big guns it's a 22 not the most power gun in the world

Does your friend not have permissions he can share with you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 873 ✭✭✭snipe02

it really is as easy as knocking on doors and being warm friendly and polite a good way to spark up the conversation is say my name is i live in and somethink like how would you feel if i was to ask you could i shoot on your land, is there anything i can do for you etc

It's not about knowing farmers or havin our own land it's about doing the homework before gettin a gun
It's like buying a rally car but nowhere to drive it
So why get a gun intended for hunting if you didn't go and get permission to use it

Not having a go but you should treat every firearm you own like it the most powerful gun in the world . I've seen several bounces of stones from a .22 , there not a toy

Many of us got our firearms ( I don't like the word "weapon") through club membership. Now some of us have started hunting AFTER we were club members and already had firearms.

Many people ask advice on this forum looking for leases and advice on where to hunt.

    You will have to network-

Use any connection you have-GAA, butcher shop, neighbors, relations,GIY group

    Think outside the box.

Have you read any books on shooting rabbits? What would you do with a rabbit after you shoot it?
Have you done any courses on hunting?

Be as knowledgeable as possible, you are as such asking for someones trust when asking to shoot on there land.

Land owners in my opinion are either pro or anti hunting. From my experience a lot more pro then anti. This can be ruined by one bad apple.

If you have tried 15 landowners then maybe its you. It could be the car you drive, the way you dress/the way you speak/your body language/shaved-unshaved/ coming across as an outsider to an area.
Consider these points and see can they change. All it takes is being in the right place at the right time.

Understanding the ways of the countryside are important. If you are really keen you will understand how if somebody was to risk letting an inexperienced shooter onto land that they have been trusted on from a post from an online site is pure stupidity you may stand a chance.

Spend time in the countryside and observe if there are good areas for rabbit shooting, but simply asking is such an area good is showing your ignorance and laziness. This may be why you haven't got any permissions yet.

Spend hours reading this boards sections as there really is a lot of really good information to be gained.

Then when you come out and ask as a newbie could I join somebody for a hunt to gain much needed experience and willing to travel the country for it you will find people being more helpfull, as your requests are ignorant and lazy in my opinion.
Then when a land owner asks you have you any experience, Your response of I got bored shooting targets and want to shoot moving ones, will change to I spotted with ShooterJR with 20years experience and gained a lot of knowledge.

Don't ever be afraid to ask a question but be sure to search online for the answer first.

The closer to home you get a permission the better as an hours drive for a walk in the rain soon becomes a gun in the for sale section.
Still looking for some were to shoot I must have called in to 15 farmers around roundwood and killmac no luck I got all the excuses not enough land, no rabbits on the land , sheep being robed . Can any body tell me if around Ashford has many rabbits so I could try there still looking to get my foot in the door..

Asking for permission from someone with just a back garden won't help- stay focused.
Check to see if any rabbits, or ask before asking for permission to shoot them,
Them reasons seem just not to give anyone permission to shoot, thank them for there time and enquire if they know of any areas with a problem with rabbits that you can help control responsibly. (Don't say this with evil look on your face)

If you want to record yourself asking for permission I 'am sure we could give you some pointers.

Great past time, and healthy source of food.

Big gun, small gun or even an air gun I wouldn't want to be at the business end of any of them. I think you need to take stock of what you've got and realies the actual capabilities of your or any firearm regardless the size.

I can see a few points some of you lads have made but just thought id say a few words about Noel in his defence as he probably feels theres a few people against him. He has had an ad up for a while saying he is new to hunting and looking for somebody to go out with to get experience and has had little or no replies and as he lives not very far from me I contacted him a few weeks ago and brought him out where he got his first couple of Rabbits. Like all of us he has to start somewhere and I can say without question that he is a very competent and safe shot and although some of the answers may have sounded different he is very aware of what his rifle is capable of. I have been out with a good few lads off this and they know I would never go shooting with somebody who is not safe or competent. Unfortunately Noel the areas you have tried are very well looked after by a couple of lads hence the rejections by farmers so far but ill contact you during the week and try sort something out for you.
Sorry for the rant and hope I havent crossed the line here but he is new to hunting and a great guy and hope to see him more on Boards in the future and look forward to his first few pics:D
