I was just looked at my license today and realised it's expiring at the start of August.. (yes I know I should have know this and be expecting it but anyways :o )
I booked around mid June and the waiting list in Cavan seems to be in or around 7-8 weeks from previous experience..

Just worried that my license will expire in or around the same time that I get my test date..

what should I do in this situtation.. can I get my license renewed fast if neccesary or how long does it take in general for a new license to be issued.. will I get some form of receipt to show that a new license has been applied for...

if I emailed the RSA would it be likely they would take this into consideration and try to give me a test before the current license expires??

If you ask to be put on the cancellation list you should get a date sooner.

Or if you decide to wait and you get a date that doesn't suit, you can ring up and see if they have anything sooner. This is what I did when I got a date that was the day after my insurance expires . They were able to get me a date for a week earlier (this counted as a cancellation and re-booking though... you can only do this twice without loosing the fee as far as I know)

No reason why you couldn't renew your license as soon as you get a test date. If you on the 1st learner permit you can renew it straight away if you on your 2nd you need to have an acknowledgement letter to state you have applied or that you have a test date in order to get a 3rd learner permit to cover you for the test.

Usually its 4-5 week waiting period from the time you get your test date to the time you sit your test. You have loads of time to get your license. As you said seems like there a longer waiting list for Cavan. As soon as you get your test date, renew your learner permit so it cover you for your test. I'd say you should get your test date within 4-5 weeks before your test date. Aprox 6-8 weeks if the waiting list is 7-8 weeks at the moment.

I'd suggest to go straight to the Motor Tax Office and get your license there and then when its not too busy. It only takes 5 mins to get done. Less stressful and no hassle compared to waiting 2-10 working days by post. Have your form filled out and everything else like passport size photos at the ready before you get your test date, you can go to the MTO as soon as you get your test date and renew your license.

ahh perfect - I though it might have been a bigger job as in sending off forms and waiting for the new one to come in the post and that... it's the second time I'll be renewing but have the form to say I've failed a test so all is ready at hand

once I get the date I'll be able to sort all out so then and I'll know whether I need to worry about the new license and that

    cheers for the help :)

If you have a letter/sheet to state you have failed your test previously that be enough to renew your learner permit if its to be a 3rd one or latter. You don't necessary have to wait until you get your test date if you have that letter/sheet stating you failed a test previously. If you haven't got it on you then wait until you get your test date! Make sure to bring the letter of your test date and your current license with you, and a form of ID as well as the other requirements to go with the form.

I'd be conscious of having it in the post waiting for it to arrive when a test is not far off and your current license about to expire, so I rather just get the license as soon as possible and not have to worry about not having it on time. Things can get lost in the post quiet easily.

It be nearly quicker to get it done in your local Motor Tax Office than trying to send it off in the post, as you could be a waiting a while, better to get it there and then at the MTO even if you be waiting a short time or queue for a bit what does it matter better to get it on the day you hand in your form rather than be waiting days for it when you could have it in your hand on the day you apply!

No problem. Good luck in your test!
