CPU Spike!

I'm getting huge CPU spikes every time I open any programs, it's causing my pc to freeze up for a few seconds sometimes. It's not over heating, I checked that. Someone else said video card overheating can cause cpu to spike but I checked that too and it seems fine.
Here's a screenshot of CPU usage while I just opened up Chrome, steam, windows messenger in succession: http://i46.tinypic.com/333c2z8.jpg

I'm thinking theres a slight chance it could be my hard drive? But looking for some sort of confirmation before I just settle on that. I also tried changing thermal paste and clearing out any dust, made a tiny difference and stopped some of the freezing but the spikes are still there just as they are in the screenshot. If you have any idea what it could be let me know, thanks!

show us your list of processes and resource monitor to see what's using the cpu

The hard disk could cause big i/o waits if it has an issue. If I were you I'd go ahead and test it in case it has a problem. Alternatively, there could be some kind of problem with your OS install or one of the anti-virus / firewall / anti-spyware that's causing a slowdown when you open something. You could go offline and disable all of these temporarily to see if they make a difference.

...and as cookie1977 says a look at your process list and resource monitor will show a lot more.

I've checked everything and it seems that the spikes are coming in either any program that's on the foreground like steam or chrome and I also seen a huge spike in svchost.exe, I think that was spiking any time I'd get IM'd or load a new page so then I started to think it was my ethernet driver? Eugh I don't know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,794 ✭✭✭cookie1977

the svchost can be run by lots of programs but the biggest user of it is aero glass. Turn off aero glass and see if you're still seeing the spikes

Just tried it, still spiking. This only started happening recently, but I also tried system restore and it did nothing. Also checked for malware and nothing. I'm starting to think it's just broken and I have to buy new stuff rather than fix it.

Hi everyone, im not sure if im in the right forum but I have Packard Bell desktop computer only about a year and half old and it now seems to freeze completely after about 20 minutes and the only way to fix it is turn off the pc for a few minutes manually and then turn it back on a few minutes later. I tried a free registry cleaner that i downloaded online and it worked for about 4 days hassle free.
Any help would me greatly appreciated. Thanks

Tis a big job to help from such a distance.

Uninstall the reg cleaner you downloaded. Download this:
    www.ccleaner.com
install and run it. Then click tools and startup and post a screen shot of whats in there.

Ok am going to sleep now but I can tell you've a hell of a lot of startup programs which could be the problem. Save the text file and upload it and I'll take a look tomorrow (or maybe someone else will tonight).

After doing all that restart the pc for the changes to occur.

I've just let the computer run for a while and it's frozen again. I'm now suspecting its something to do with the Internet wireless connection.
It seems that when I turn the computer back on immediately after shutting it down with the power button it doesn't connect to the Internet
When I click on the Internet icon in the bottom bar, the modem or connection option doesn't show.
If I use the Ethernet cable it works but wirelessly it doesn't.

    Hope I'm not waffling now
    Thnks
