Hotmail -> Gmail -> Hotmail?

    Hey all,

    Here's the story..

    Wayyy back in the mid-90s I had a Hotmail address and for a time it was good. Not much spam, worked seamlessly with MSN Messenger and was easy to use.

    Then Gmail launched and so I setup an account with it too. Over time of course it became the best/default "free" service as services like Hotmail became inundated with spam. A lot of websites/forums don't accept Hotmail addresses for that reason and even recruitment services look at Gmail more favourably. I also bought an Android phone and it ties into that as well.

    In the meantime though Hotmail seems to have "grown up" and the webmail UI is certainly a lot better (IMO) than Gmail's latest incarnation which drives me demented - I just don't like its stripped out interface and I find the way it keeps track of message threads very annoying.

    So recently I discovered that MS/Hotmail let me register my Gmail account as a Live account. So now it looks like I'm logged into the Hotmail system with my Gmail address.

    Ideally I want to cut down to 2 email accounts from 5 (don't ask! :)) - both Gmail - but using the Hotmail interface, integration with both Windows and Google messengers and of course, that'll work with my Android phone.

    So does that mean then that if I redirect email from my "real" Gmail account that I'll have my "more professional looking" Gmail address with Hotmail's better UI, Windows Live Messenger integration and so on? Or is there a catch I'm not seeing?

    You know you can change this in settings?

    Cog - Settings - General (tab) - Conversation view. Set that to off and messages won't be in threads any more (I'm assuming this is what you mean?).

    Also regarding layout you can change the buttons back to text by scrolling down and selecting "text" beside the option 'button labels'.

    Gmail has suited me over the last few years with their filters and labels and hasn't been a pain at all to navigate or view.

    Oh, also another trick is if you right click on a mail it'll preview it.

    Yep I know you can turn off threading.. I mean more how new messages are at the bottom of the thread, how it uses labels but not real folders that then cause issues with other clients etc.
