Volvo S80 Air Con - STINKS

Asking for advise on behalf of a friend here. His S80 is a couple of years old and has had air-filter changes as part of normal services. However, all of a sudden when he turns on the air conditioning there is a STRONG smell of mildew crossed with old socks blowing through the vents. This goes away after a short time.

It's obviously some kind of bacterial / fungal growth in the system. Is this likely to be caused by the filter ? Or, is there any risk that some condensation duct / drain is blocked ?

How's this best cleared out? Will the garage be able to do it?

Also, is this a known problem with Volvos?

The smell may be coming from the pollen filter which is different to the air filter. You could check this first and perhaps use one of those air con "bombs" they circulate through the system kill any bacteria. They cost around €10, a pollen filter for is about €40 + from a main dealer. The part number is 30630755

Apparently it's due a service fairly soon so they will just make sure the garage does a filter change and a clean out.

Had a similar issue with my car.

Change the pollen filter as mytime said..

then get an A/C deodorising aerosol from halfords and follow the instructions exactly. (this involves running the A/C in COLD and in RECIRCULATE with the windows and doors closed for 15 mins with the Aerosol going off like a teargas grenade in the back seat - make sure you have a spare key to get back in)

then you open all the windows and your car will smell lovely for a year at least.

Most likely the pollen/cabin filter. The S80 runs the AC for a while after its stopped to prevent the buildup of crud and microbes on the evaporator so its less likely to be the problem. A refrigerant leak thats big enough to smell will leave you with no AC in next to no time at all.

Change the cabin filter and go from there.
