I had to replace the stopcock as it started to leak.
I turned off the water out on the road and fitted the new stopcock and turned on the water again.I thought everything was ok, i had a shower yersterday and did the washing up and what have you but i went to have a shower today and there was no hot water. Investigating further i checked the tank upstairs which was empty. Where do i go from here???
    Is the system airlocked?
Do i have to bleed the system?
How would you go about bleeding the system??

    thanks in advance.

Do you have cold water at the kitchen sink?

If not it could be the valve, that you closed at the road, is stuck closed.

You have water at all cold taps? and yet the attic tank is empty?

Is the ball valve in the attic hanging down into the tank? Bad terminalogy, but if you image the float rising when the tank is full, is it in the open position when the tank is empty? If you move the float up and down do you get water?

Yes the ball valve is hanging down ito the tank/open position, i moved the ball valve up and down and not a dickey bird.
Scrathing my head as to where to go next???

Something similar happened to me before, ended up being a little bit of grit in the ballcock blocking the waterflow. Do you know if the water is reaching the ballcock?

No there doesn't seem to be any water coming to the ballcock at all.

+1 on this, you'll need to dismantle the ballvalve and clean it out, don't forget to turn off the mains first, it would a good idea to turn on the mains for a few seconds with the valve dismantled to clear any debry that may be in the pipework.

+2 it has to be a defective valve. Still perplexed by cold in every tap do?

Yea, its confusing if there is cold water in every (cold) tap. Normally if the tank is empty, there should be cold water, if any, only in the cold tap at the sink.

Thanks to all who replied, problem is sorted.
Wextext you were on the money, water was getting to the ballcock so ii dismantled the ballcock and there was some grit in there. Simples :D
