    Hi all,

Im hoping to try out kayaking this week, (Thursday to be exact) but am finding it hard to find somewhere in the West to go.

My boyfriend has some experience kayaking and has his own sit on kayak and gear, where as I have zero experience and no equipment but am a decent swimmer.

Would any of you be able to recommend a company to go with- we live in South Sligo so anywhere along the west coast would be great!

Any Advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Just figured out we can borrow some gear for me- would anyone be able to recommend somewhere sea/lake that we could go ourselves - not on an acutal guided tour/course (in mayo sligo area) that would be suitable for a beginner ?

    Thanksbiggrin.gif

I went on a course with them once. Absolutely brilliant, couldn't recomend them more!

They're the only place that I know of on the west coast, but have a look at http://iska.ie/m2/index.php and see if there are any other sea kayaking options on the west coast :)

Best of luck getting somewhere, as I said Ali is brilliant instructor, but they may have a few instructors working! :)

can't go wrong with Ali, he's a top instructor

there's also Jim Morrissey in Galway - http://kayakmor.ie/ and Brian Forrest in Donegal http://northwestseakayaking.ie/
Apart from the guys in north Clare, I don't think there's anyone else operating on the west coast

If your still looking for somewhere to have a paddle around Sligo you could try Streedagh, 15 minutes drive north of Sligo town. There's a lovely Lagoon at the back of the beach which is shallow and calm. 2 hours either side of high tide would be your best bet.

Ballysadare estuary is nice too, can be accessed from Strandhill, there's a huge seal colony and great views of knocknarae. Keep in mind though, if the tide and wind are against you it can be hard work.
