Website to check Reg Nos?

I got taken out with a left hook at Booterstown Ave this morning and despite my banging against the car as I was swept around, the car behind sounding his horn, and a pedestrian trying to flag him down, the driver continued on.

I got what I thought was the reg as I hit the deck, but when I went back to Blackrock Garda Station to report, the number didn't check out. I am fairly sure about most of the elements of the number so I was wondering if there is anywhere I could play around with the permutations to see if I can match the make/model and colour.

Fortunately I just got a bad dig in the ribs from my hanblebars as I fell and a few scrapes but it really annoyed me that he could just drive off without checking how I was.

    I don't think that's a very wise idea!

Play around with the number in here and you will be able to bring up the make and model

If he is fairly sure about most of it and changing one digit matches make model colour it would be very unlikely to be a false positive.

That would be for the justice system to determine.

Using an online database to fill in the blanks and then going back to the gardai and reporting the full reg as if it were recalled that way is likely to end very badly.

Perhaps that wasn't what was suggested.

Maybe the Gardai could, I don't know, investigate it or something. Aren't there cameras in the area? Jeezy Creezy, a hit and run and it sounds like they can't be bothered.

Its not a good idea at all as was pointed out in another thread as several dealers get registered plates in batches and you could have very similar numbers on similar or identical cars.

While I feel bad for the OP "finding" the number is not the same as "knowing" the number, and you are in fact lying if you go in claiming to know the number after "figuring" it out. If it was a local dealer it is also possible that the drivers of similar cars with similar plates could be driving in the area.

Any chance you could ID the driver? If so and you have the time a better idea would be to try and ID the car and driver down in BR over a few mornings and get the reg that way but again, unless you got a clear look this is also risky. Presumably in morning traffic they would be around the same area, at approx the same time, but again, might be the only time they have ever driven along that road.

I realise none of these are practical and maybe outright impossible time wise for you but playing a guessing game could have far more serious consequences for either yourself or an innocent party.

Far better than my ideas, the OP will have to officially lodge it as a hit and run for this to happen AFAIK.

Just to clarify. I tried to memorise the number as I was hitting the deck - not an easy task. I did however also get the colour, make and I think model. As a number of people came up to me and were asking after my welfare, I may have confused the number before I eventually stuck it in my phone. I also took details from one witness.

When I went back to the Garda station, the number I gave did not match the model I reported and I didn't want to waste their time calling up possible matches on the computer. I think I have recalled correctly (though I may be wrong) the year and first, fourth and fifth digits. Only if I can find a match to the make/model on the 100 odd combinations for the second and third digits then I will file a complaint with the Gardai and leave it for them to investigate.

On a related point, I remember when we switched to our current reg system from the old alpha numeric system, a debate on radio about the merits of the new system as regards memory in an emergency. If I recall correctly (my memory again:D), an "expert" stating that the old alpha numeric system was easier for people to remember. They also pointed out that even with the system we use, that it would make more sense to reverse the order and have the county letter and year last. The logic was that as we read left to right, the most significant data is positioned last rather than first. For example if you recall the number accurately, its a lot easier to find a county/ year and fit to the number than fitting a county/year to fragments of a number.

OP does not have to claim that they are sure of the reg at all. I would suggest they be frank with the gardai that they were not sure but got these digits right and double checked on cartell.

In 'small' incidents like this the gardai are not arsed checking partial registrations; they would if it was a bank robbery or fatal hit and run I can assure you. I used work in the industry and had access to a large database of Irish registrations and there was no pattern of sequential or similar registrations being registered to matching make/ model/ colour.

Seems like a fine idea to me. If he gets a match all the Gardai have to do is phone the owner and ask "where were you at this time?" to rule out a false positive.

The guard taking the report should be doing the search OP. It only takes a couple of minutes to do.
Don't be worried about wasting anyone's time because you aren't. It's a hit & run, and people who do those need to be stopped.

any chance the car passed CCTV or traffic cameras just before or after the incident and get the reg / distinguishing characteristics that way ?

Gardai will only do this if the OP reports it as a hit and run or as a RTA at the very least,

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. Don't bother the Gardai with a "would you mind checking this reg for me please officer?" type query, rather lodge a complaint that some chap in a car ran you off your bike and then decided to drive off rather than stop.
