What fertilizer are you spreading?

I have never spread fertilizer on pasture in the middle of summer before. Normally I cover all the pasture with slurry and then give it a bag or 2 to the acre in March and just let it grow for the summer. But grass is scarce. I was thinking about spreading a few ton on the drier pasture to bulk it up a bit.

What type of fertilizer are you spreading?

    What rate?

    Any idea on price?

What type of fertilizer are you spreading? CAN

What rate? approx 30 units every 6 weeks ie. cover half the grazing area every 3 weeks

    Any idea on price?
€330 per ton will squeeze some discount when paying

depends on a few factors. I'm due to do a full coverage of everywhere in the next few days, may go with a just nitrogen and sulphur (ASN) or might include a bit of Phosphorus aswell as temps are just so low irrespective of if there is a good reserve in the soil. Havnt applied S to grazing land yet this season

Sulphacan here, think its 26N, 5S. About a bag to the acre after each grazing until a surplus appears and 2 after the silage which is taking its time coming back. €315/t bought in May.

I am spreading CAN as I have it but if I was buying I would spread Urea it is wet enough for it to work.

Not spreading any but if I was I'd agree with F pudsey and go with urea. Use 2/3 bag per acre, about 30 units.

If you were doing silage after grass 20, 0, 15 might be better if you need K.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

spreadin urea as its in the shed, will run out of it this week then it will be sulpha can.
40u/ month, cows going around in 14-18 days, so 20-25u per application

if your applying high amounts of slurry better off with and AN product instead of Urea as your nitrogen source irrespective of price.

I'd strongly suggest getting soil samples done before spreading any fertiliser.

€25 per sample will cover it and it will tell you exactly what you need as opposed to guess. Fertiliser is too expensive for guesswork.

No it won't, it will only tell you whats in the ground as opposed to whats available to the plant. soil tests can be miles out so take what they say with a grain of salt. Just look at the moment even on soils where there is say an index 3 in P the plants can't access this P due to cold conditions, that why I would be going with a little rapidly available P just to keep things going. Any crops that have had foliar P applied this year are miles ahead of crops that haven't irrespective of soil indices

I have soil samples done. But it doesn't tell me what fertilizer to spread. My ground isn't majorly deficient in anything. I simply want to grow grass, and fast!!

Your problem is that your plants are not able to access whats in the ground at the moment and N levels are probably low. Get some N but remember its not a substitute for the orange bulb in the sky working.

    Spreading a bag/acre of Target 24-2.2-4.5 atm.
Results from stuff spread in last few weeks seem good, even given the weather!
    €370/ton delivered in small bags.

i bought 3 tonnes of urea and 6 tonnes of sulpher can at the start of the month and currently working with the urea but if it gets too dry for urea will keep it for next year but its looking doubtfull. spreading 30 units to the acre.

put a half bag of 24.2.5.10 (left over from 2nd cut) and 1/2 bag of Can per ac on the drier ground this week - have grass elsewhere but cant graze it so had to drop fields from the rotation, cows were doing a good impression of a 4 furrow for a few days last week
    - from the looks of things i will be making bales of some areas when (:(:(:() the grazing ground ever drys up enough!!!

Well, all I can add is that when I got my soil samples done, my Agri planner told me exactly what to shake and how much.

When You do a soil sample it samples down to 2.5-3'' however grass grows in the top 1'' so a soil defficient in P&K in that area will not grow grass. Ploughing will bring P&K back up to that area but how many farmers reseed and how many plough ( I do not as I bring too much stone up). Also ph we are all told that gran lime is much more expensive than bulk lime but if it is spread before ploughing you are supposed to spread twice the amount.

An agri planner will work off figures but in ayear like this ????
