Applying For A Canadian Passport - How Do I Go About Doing It??

    Ok guys,

I was born in England to two Irish parents, moved back to Ireland (specifically NI) at age 14 in the year 2000.

I currently hold both British and Irish passports.

My father was born in Canada (Toronto) and returned to Ireland at age 2. Since he left in 1960, he has only been back to Canada once for a two week holiday in 1978 as a student, he hasn't returned since.

My father has not held a Canadian passport since the 80s and still doesn't own one, but is now looking to get one again.

I have myself never been to Canada, but would love to go one day. I'm wondering how I would go about applying for a Canadian passport.

I went through this online test and it suggested this:

    http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules/index.asp

"Based on your answers, you are likely a Canadian citizen."

So I have the potential to apply for a passport, I have I read some of it, but it seems complicated. I think its supposed to as long as 18 months for me the complete the process. But I'm not sure.

Can somebody go about and tell (in simple terms) how I go about it, what hurdles I have to jump through and how long the whole process will take?

I appreciate any advice given. :)

*** Moving from US/ Canada Travel to Living Abroad, which seems to fit better ****

Have you tried contacting the Canadian Embassy?

Your father will need to obtain a copy of his birth certificate before he can apply for his Canadian passport. Information can be found at this link:

    http://www.ontario.ca/en/information_bundle/birthcertificates/119274.html

Births in Canada are recorded by the provincial registrar so someone born in Vancouver would need to contact the British Columbia registrar, in Halifax did would be the Nova Scotia registrar et al. Once your father has his birth certificate, he can apply for a Canadian passport. This can be done through the Canadian Embassy in Dublin. Complete the form and submit the required fee.

Your case is a little more difficult. The best place to go is this link. There is a question and answer section to determine if you are a Canadian and what the process is for you:

    http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/rules/index.asp

    Good luck eh.

Likely your father will need the long form version of his birth certificate. This version lists a person's parents' full names.

    Canadian Embassy - Dublin, Ireland
    7-8 Wilton Terrace
    Dublin 2
    Ireland
    Tel: 353 (1) 234-4000
    Fax: 353 (1) 234-4001
Contact the Canadian Embassy, I assume they will be able to send you a passport form, and more info about your situation.

I found this page http://www.ppt.gc.ca/info/form.aspx?lang=eng&region=international and according to this passport application form http://www.ppt.gc.ca/form/pdfs/pptc040.pdf it looks like you need a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship to submit with the passport (the other option is a Canadian birth certificate, which you don't have)

Here is info on the Cert. of Canadian Citizenship http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof-how.asp This is the form http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/citizen/CIT0001E.pdf and on it, it asks you to list your parents' citizenship, how it was obtained, etc. and I assume it's established here, that you are a citizen, based on the fact that your parent is a Canadian citizen. The form refers to an instruction sheet, that I can't find on the website, I assume that sheet asks you to send your dad's long form birth certificate with the form.

I would contact the Canadian Consulate in Ireland, they should be able to help you with forms and information.

I'm in the same situation as you: father born in Canada to Irish parents. They returned to Ireland (the North) when he was two. He's only been back once on a holiday in '04. Myself and my brothers were born in Donegal, Irish passports, birth certs and all that craic. My father has no Canadian documentation aside from his birth cert.

I'm currently in the process of getting my proof of citizenship, it's a fair bit of work and takes a bloody long time.

My situation is a little more complicated than usual (lots of Irish to English translation trouble with names and birth certs), and so it's taking close to two years now. I sent the application away in May 2012, they began processing in September 2012 and still haven't finished. They said it takes up to 18 months from start of processing.

You'll have to pay legal costs of getting a solicitor to certify all your documents, but at least your birth cert will be in English, meaning no official translation fees!

Best option, as mentioned, is going directly to the Embassy at the above address, Wilton Terrace in Dublin. It's on the south side, just off Baggot St by the canal. They're really helpful and friendly in there.

    Good luck!
