E46 320CD Tyre warning

I've been driving my E46 for nearly 5 years, and have had a few punctures in that time.
The sensor usually alerted me, but recently I've had a lot of false positives.

Usually in the morning, a few minutes into my commute, motorway driving and the sensor alerts after maybe 3-4 minutes. I pull in, check the tyres, all fine, reset it, drive off and no further problems.

Could be a faulty sensor, or am I missing something?
Is it something an Indy garage could replace or would it need to go to BMW, also, anyone have any idea of the cost of replacing it?

Edit - I know it's not an actual pressure sensor, as far as I know it alerts based on rotation of the wheels going out of sync.

Could be a faulty sensor, on the E46 the sensor is in the valve IIRC, where on the newer stuff its based on the rotation of the wheel so less prone to false alerts.

Maybe get somebody to check for any codes stored and see if it can narrow it down to one particular sensor.

Worth taking it to an Indy garage, or would you go main dealer only with something like this?

If you have too much money you can go to the dealer yeah.
Otherwise plenty of garage with the proper diag equipment. Usually Autologic and the likes. Standard diag system would not pick this up as this is BMW specific sensor most likely.

    Where are you based?

Too much money is not a problem I have.

    Based in Cork City.

    Hehe.
There is someone in Cork I believe but can't remember the name. Surely someone from the BMW driver crowd will pop in and provide the answer.
Good luck, I am sure it is nothing major.

Any BMW heads got any advice on this?

Had another puncture yesterday, threw on the spare wheel (fully pumped), drove on and the alert kicked in again (despite the fact that it never alerted me to the puncture)...

Do I have a faulty sensor or is there something I'm missing here?

Have you got the same brand and spec of tyres all around?

And when you say you check the tyres, do you actually check the pressure or just that none are obviously flat?

Yes, Four identical tyres, all replaced at the same time.
I stopped and checked to ensure I didn't have a flat, then usually when I could ( a few hours later) went to local garage to check pressure.
All four would usually be within a few psi of each other.

If they are not all at the same pressure then you will get the light coming on. The system uses the ABS sensors so that effectively rules out a faulty sensor otherwise you;d have an ABS issue too.

What size wheels are they? Some BMW wheels are very prone to developing small cracks which can slowly leak air.

    17' wheels.
Hmmm.... wonder how I'd go about getting the wheels checked?

It freaks me out a bit as I drive motorway mostly to and from work (often carrying smally on the way to creche). I'm usually travelling at 120ish so the last thing I want is a puncture at that speed, hence the alarm scares the crap out of me.

Did you reset the system after changing the tyre?

Yes, if I didn't the red light would stay on all the time.

I have dealer/factory diagnostics for BMW if you want me to have a look for you. It will have to be later this evening or Sunday/Monday though. (I'm in Cork)

Cheers, are you city or County?
Might take you up on that sometime when you're free, what would cost be?
