No it really is called the €1.50 shop it's the €2.00 shops only cheaper that's isn't supposed to sound rude . They have lots of computer and camping stuff but I was looking in tesco and the hdmi cable is normally about €20.00

Dealz is a €1.49 store. Would have been called Oneeurofortynineland but those geeks in marketing said it was "awkward" :p

There is also one of these shops in the Ilac Centre if Balbriggan is a little far for most people. :pac:

I personally don't spend less than €20 on my HDMI cables. The quality of the €1.50/2 ones are just horrible* this is a much better option http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINX-HDMI-Cable-Premium-Plated/dp/B000H8TQL4

*this may or may not be a complete lie...

..............then I believe you're wasting at least €18.50 per cable. HDMI is a Digital Signal and is basically on or off, so either it works or it doesn't. While there may be some question as to whether a 'cheap' cable may be more prone to breakage, or possibly interference, this would be noticeable by dropped frames, pixellation or sparklies on screen. Having bought and used at least 4 HDMI cables from Dealz at €1.49 I see no such issues. AVReview in the UK, after a test of various cost cables, concluded "Not even a blind comparison test … could reveal any obvious differences in performance between these interconnects". Any suggestion that expensive, gold-plated, top-of-the-range HDMI cables will improve your picture quality is suspect at best, and is definitely Manufacturer hype. DO you have any evidence for your comment "The quality of the €1.50/2 ones are just horrible", and what do you mean by quality?

I bought one of these in the shop in the Ilac Centre on Saturday. It's made by Belkin and the original price sticker was on it of £21.99  Not bad for €1.50!

It's the industry's worst kept secret that there is no difference between cheap and expensive cables

No no no, you all need ONE OF THESE*!!!!1!!one

Granted there may be versions of HDMI that support different functions but a HDMI cable 1.5 metres long doesn't need gold plating.

Good find, Cathy, I've bought micro usb cables in the Ilac-equivalent for eur1.50 too, does the job nicely and no waiting weeks for shipping from Hong Kong :)

    *See Liam O's disclaimer

    It is what it's.

why does that cable have the ability to tell you that the source is 4K, when a HDMI cable can't even transfer that?

Indeed it is a lie:D. Only a fool would spend that kind of money on a hdmi cable unless it was a very long one (which would be useless as it would lose signal quality). The €2 hdmi cable is just as good as the €20 cable. If you dont believe me have a look at the Cable & Digital TV forum where the issue has been discussed on several occasions. You may have to do a search.

Lidl had great 1.5m HDMI Cables a few months back for €6 that had a 90 degree twistie connector on the end, so if you have a tv that you needed to pust it up into or just into, it'd do both, takes some of lean pressure off the connection on the TV.

That's not entirely accurate. There are a few differences outlined at the links below.

I live near enough to balbriggan. Is a HDMI cable the one for connecting a laptop to a TV by any chance? I could do with one of those and they cost a fortune in PC World.

If your laptop and tv have a HDMI port then yes this will work great :) . HDMI will carry the sound from your laptop also,

    Nick

Actually now that I check, my netbook only has vga - so back to the drawing board. Ideally I'd like to be able to connect it both to my HDMI TV and to an old scart TV (for the many times I can't get next or near the 'good' tv with three teenagers in the house). I'm trying to get art instructional videos I've purchased online onto a screen large enough to watch comfortably while painting along. It's all very complicated! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭gomara

Well most HDMI TVs would also have a PC/VGA input, so a standard (cheap) VGA cable should work there. As for connecting to an old SCART TV thats probably a no-no. Note if using the VGA input, no sound is carried, so you'll have to have separate speakers.

Build quality isn't too important when it's sitting behind your TV for 99% of it's life.
