Watching a few games in the last fortnight or so and the new square ball rule while a good idea is not being enforced properly by the officials.

There has been a number of scores got when the player has been in the square before the ball has been played.

what are peoples opinions on the new rule?

Could someone who knows post exactly what the rule is? I'm a bit confused at the minute.

    Football Only – “Square Ball”

This has been amended to allow a player enter the small rectangle once the final deliberate play of the ball has been made, i.e as soon as the player kicks, hand-passes, fist passes or deliberately flicks the ball into the small rectangle then the attacking player may enter. The rule is unchanged with regard to “Set Play” i.e. Free Kicks, Line Balls and 45s – in these instances players are not permitted to enter the small rectangle before the ball.

It's a good rule if it's refereed correctly. But referees seem to think that there is no square ball rule whatsoever from open play. That's two weekends in a row that a square ball from open play has been missed. Umpires really have to be trained to spot this type of thing and referees to consult with their umpires if there may be an issue.

    why the 'lol'?

Hammer Archer is right ...in Aussie Rules they have young trained umpires behind both goals....whats the point in having 4 guys behind the goal if they are stood in the wrong position or are just not doing their jobs properly.

Basically, in open play, a player cannot be inside the small square before the ball is kicked/handpassed/flicked towards the square (sort of similar to the offside rule in soccer).
So Thomas O'Connor's first point of the second half in the Meath game last week and Cork's third goal today shouldn't have been allowed.
From set plays, the square ball rule is the same as before.

I was baffled by emphatic the commentators on the tv were about this. On my tele Nicolas Murphy wasn't in the picture when Kerrigan hand passed the ball so it seemed inconclusive to me. When he enters the frame it seemed at least possible he was outside the square when the pass was made. Marginal call (the ball was over the line which probably makes that a moot point btw;))

Also the 'experts' seemed to freeze frame when the ball entered the square. Why? Its no longer relevant. You could only hope the referees have a greater understanding of the rules.

You're right that it's inconclusive. But I think the fact that he's way inside the square when he comes into the picture means you can deduce that he was in the square before the ball was played, but you definitely can't be certain.
