Hi I'm having problems with my septic tank, the percolation area is starting to get blocked. it's a concrete tank in about 16 years which never gave trouble till this year. I've been talking to a guy about the pirana system , which introduces air cylinder into the tank and some bactera. It's supposed to be a great system but I'd like to know more before I invest. Any know anything about it?

It would seem that it isn't your tank but your percolation area that is giving trouble, after 16 years that should be expected.

For your planning permission 16 years ago you would most likely have had a reserve percolation area shown on the site layout plan. It is probably time to construct the reserve percolation area now and switch over to it. In 16 years time you can switch back to the existing percolation area when the new one starts to give trouble.

Or you could contact a site assesor and have your entire system assesed and a recommendation given, either way it is best to get some on-site advice from an expert.

+ 1 to what PUT says, not tank but perc area needs work.

Only thing to add is if you have the chance to wait and see what the fools in the DOE are going to stipulate re this new septic tank criteria as you may end up doing work that may not pass.

Cheers guys, thanks for the help, I'm still curious about this pirana system though, I wonder is it as good as it's made out. I've heard it can clear a perculation area as well as keep the tank clear , anybody know otherwise?

Cant see how it can do extra for the perc area bar within the confines of the tank itself break down the solid matter that will/could possibly escape to the perc area through the outlet? Basically, what it's supposed to do initially.
Has that system go all the relevant Irish certs? I think I read about it before but was mainly about it working in the US, not here? Could be wrong.

As PUT said above, 1st step should be to get an assessor or Eng. on site asap and they can give you specific direction to your system as they will be able to see directly what the issue is.
