Frequent flyer program - but which one for RTW trip?

Have a RTW trip booked that's made up of 1 BA flight and 3 Qantas flights. The flights are all quite high in mileage and the general advice seems to be that we should join a frequent flyer program before heading off. The question is which one?

For us, we'd most likely only be interested in earning miles for free flights in the future within the US (and Canada) or maybe between the US and the UK. Does that mean it makes sense for us to sign up with someone like American Airlines (even though we won't be flying with them on the RTW trip)? It seems that all airlines are happy to give points for mileage with the other airlines, albeit at different conversion rates. But might we get the best value for our points with the airline we're flying with, i.e. mainly Qantas in this case?

    Life's getting complicated!

Quantas are in One World http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oneworld

From that list you might find that BA could be best choice, simply due to proximity to UK and the higher likelihood of you ending up on another BA flight soon. Make sure you look into the redemption tier, getting freebies is difficult at the best of times and usually there are many fees attached.

Thanks Savman. It's all double-dutch to me - the programs seem overcomplicated and I'm starting to wonder if you really do get something for nothing, as in flights of your choice in exchange for mileage points earned with no catch! I'm going to go with BA as you suggest as at this stage I need to inform the travel agent of whichever mileage program membership we're with. Murphy's law and all that though, I'll probably be cursing the decision in a few months time! :)
