Vodafone Smart 858

I have one of these but for various reasons it was never used and the prepay sim has now expired or not working anymore. I tried a O2 sim card in it and to my surprise it worked. Presumably this is because these must be unlocked from day one??

The only thing is there seems to be a lot of Vodafone stuff still on the phone (including the red start up screen). Is there any way this could be removed?

    Thanks

The Smart should be locked to Vodafone but if it works, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. ;)

To get rid of the Vodafone stuff you will at the very least need to root your phone and to be honest I would recommend installing a custom rom such as CyanogenMod 7. I had it on mine and it gets rid of the crap you don't need whilst give you features you'll use and with increased performance too. Just to warn you Vodafone won't help you if something goes wrong but it should be easy enough to get it back to stock if you need to return it in the future.

If you just want to root it, I used an app called z4root, you'll have to google where to find it now. Then you can download Titanium Backup (free version is fine) from the app market to unistall the VF stuff.

To install CM7, instructions are here.

Had a look at your suggestion and looks a bit too technical for me....not really technically minded :o.

Not to worry...I can live with the phone as it is :D

    Thanks again!

No problem, my Smart was the first time I'd done any messing around with roms and rooting and it turned out fine but even if you do make a mistake it's easy enough to fix. That said, there isn't too much Vodafone crap on it anyway and it shouldn't affect you using it too much. Enjoy!
