2002 passat tdi and brake indicator symbol appears for several hours and then disappears for days then comes on again ( also says on engine start up that to "check brake pads" on the computer but pads have plenty left on them.

Have you checked front and rear pads and the inner pads too?

If so then likely a broken wire or some water/dirt getting onto the connector for the pad wear sensor.

On that model passat there is no sensor on the rear.

The sensor is located on the front of the car on the inner brake pads.

I would think that the inner pads are worn, only way to check is by removing the wheel and having a thorough visual inspection of the pad.
