Tyre question

    Hi guys,

How long should a set of tyres last? I know there is probably no definitive answer to this question, but is there ballpark?

I ask because today I got a puncture. When I was inspecting the tyre to find the culprit I found quite a few little "scratches" in the tyre (mostly about 1/2mm in size). I guess that the majority of these haven't actually fully penetrated the tyre. Obviously the one that caused the puncture did, it's about 1mm long.

Is this a sign that they need replacing? Or is this perfectly normal? I haven't done that far in them (don't think I'd have done 1000km yet).

    Thanks!

Depending on road conditions, especially in urban areas this likely to be normal.
My last set of tires lasted 6,300 miles (over 10,000km) I had switched them around to wear more evenly as the back tyre wears out more quickly. I regularly inspect them and remove pieces of glass that get embedded in the thread before it works through and results in punctures.

Mitchelin Dynamic Sport tyres that came with my bike started to develop small holes (not even scratches) in the rear tyre after approx 2000km and I was getting a puncture every ride. I was careful to ensure that they were properly inflated, but it appeared that the holes were being made by small pebbles that I crossed along the roads.

Put an armadillo on the back and its runnning fine - with 1000 more km on the front tyre, it is starting to get an odd little hole. I check it after every cycle and repair the holes and scratches with superglue.

The better the tyres, the longer they will last!!

This is my worry. Some of them may actually be holes, but it was hard to see if they had fully penetrated. I don't want to be getting constant punctures.

Has anyone any tyre recommendations out of interest? I use the bike for commuting and sportives and leisure spins (no racing).

Schwalbe Durano Plus are good. Up from that, the Schwalbe Marathon offer very good puncture protection but with extra rolling resistance ( and possibly less comfortable)
