I am taking the car with me, so delivery / checked baggage charges not an issue. Just wondering is it worth it - from those of you with experience buying, am i likely to get a better deal? Is there a more extensive second hand trade? Have up to 500 to spend - looking for an electric, ESP preferably.

Well depends where you go really... You will most likely have more choice and it may well be a few quid less too prob

If playing before you buy is a must then yeah you're going to get a much better selection of guitars and most likely a better deal. Second hand especially you'll get up to 10 times more gear available to you. One look on http://www.preloved.co.uk and http://www.gumtree.com/ will show you that. And if you're willing to travel for it then you'll have an immense choice to pick from. The London area alone there is a mind boggling ammount of gear. If you're going the 2nd hand route have a few things eyed up online b4 you go.

if you'll be there anyway, then yes.

if you are planning the trip JUST to get the guitar, then no.

there are places which are heaving with guitar shops and you might just get a bargain.

tottenham court rd in London is just wall to wall gear shops.

Andertons in Guilford's fairly decent price wise.

Am going for work, so any saving should be worth it. Thanks for the input, will spend some time looking online before going.

I bought an awesome Goodall acoustic (made in Hawaii !!) in Brighton at the Acoustic Music Co.

probably the best shop for luthier steel-strings I've ever been in.

I'll be going to Bath soon to visit the Vintage & Rare Guitar store. UK has a lot of box-shifter type guitar shops, but loads of uber-cool boutiques along the lines of our own highly respectable Some Neck Guitars
