Basically anything that is in the rules of the road including roadsigns .as an ADI I usually give my pupils a sheet with. 50 random questions to answer about 2-4 weeks before their test, just helps them brush up on anything they may have forgotten since doing the thory test,

i have done a few test and the strangest question I was ever asked was what road markings would you find at a no entry road? so not too hard.

They will ask you signs and such off of this sheet

If you do a quick boards search, I believe there was a thread on the most commonly asked questions a few years back. I've never gotten asked anything outside of that.

    Popular questions are
When can you overtake on the left?
When can you cross a continuous white line?
What does a broken white line mean?
What does a broken yellow line mean?
What does a single yellow line mean?
What does a double yellow line mean?
Explain the rule in relation to the yellow box?
    When shouldn't you overtake?

Also, I was asked twice what were the speed limits for R,L & N roads, and motorways!

The best way to prepare is to read the rules of the road book or read the rules online via RSA website. They could phrase questions differently. Generally its the road signs mainly regulatory and warning signs and any other potential road signs. As other posters mentioned above be the usual questions. Prepare a set of aprox number of questions in advance though and go over the most common type ones. Your driving instructor might have a sheet for you to study.

Plenty of websites online to help you with the oral side. Best way to test yourself is to go over the theory test cd/book. Really helps that would focus on the areas I mention below.

Topics other than road signs, probably be on overtaking, road markings, traffic lights, roundabouts, right of way, pedestrian crossings, headlights (dipping) and any other potential question they might ask on the rules of the road.

Regarding the topics other areas might be on dual carriage ways, motorways, tunnels, level crossing, making a turn, traffic calming measures, speed limit, braking distance (dry/wet roads), explain the 2 second rule, in the event of a break down what to do, who must you stop for, garda hand signals what they mean. Maybe be asked on something what it means like 'blindspot', 'blow out' things like that there is a glossary at the back of the rules of the road book.

Study what be relevant and that as a driver be expected to know, you don't have to go through the whole book. The areas I have mentioned above be enough to go on really but go through as much of the rules of the road that's relevant thoroughly as 3 or more unanswered or incorrectly answered questions constitute a grade 2 fault.

Know your technical checks, how to do them and explaining them and demonstrate them. 3 incorrect ones on that and you get a grade 2 fault. So know your car under bonnet well, where things are, tell how to carry out the check and you might be asked to demonstrate a check in particular be the lights, wipers, demisters, washer fluid and oil check.

    Best of luck!
