    Hi all,

I'm only starting out at golf, well been playing for about a year. Last night I was out for a few holes and i put my wifes Ping 18 degree 3 wood in my bag it has an ultra light shaft. Well i decided to give it a go off the first tee box beacause my driving has been terrible lately. I God the results were great I was hitting it straight and true every time, with my driver I normally have a strong right to left turn on the ball. Played it for the full 18 holes hitting it straight an true every time averaging about 220-260 yards of the tee. I play with a Burner 2.0 driver 9.5 degree normally stiff shaft. My question would the ladies shaft have a lower kick point or possible is the more flexible shaft more suitable to my swing speed. any suggestion or comments greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi.

While swing speed and shaft are strongly interlinked, tempo comes into it as well. If you've a very smooth transition/swing, you will be able to control a more flexible shaft that someone with the same swingspeed but a much quicker tempo.

I remember a few years ago it was pointed out that Ernie Els was using the equivalent of a regular shaft in his driver, wheras people who didn't hit it as far as him were using stiffer shafts. This was supposedly down to his silky smooth tempo, with no sudden movements happening anywhere in his swing.

The bottom line is if you're hitting that 3 wood nicely, then don't mind what it says on the shaft, just go with it!

Here's a post I put on another thread with a similar question about shafts, some good info in the link.

"Like guys said here, you've really got to try out a variety to choose.

There is no industry standard for flex, so regular in one brand can be similar to stiff in another, etc. There's also the kick-point, weight, etc to take into account. Either get fitted or try out a load - and I mean a load - of drivers and pick the one you hit best.

Just don't get caught up in the concept that the stiffer a shaft you use, the cooler you are. You should use the most flexible shaft that you can control as you'll get more distance from it.

Some decent info here in "Shaft Terminology" section

Google will find you a lot more. "

I have to say I felt a lot more confident with this club which resulted in a very smooth tempo on my swing. Gonna play a few more rounds with it and then consider getting my driver reshafted.

    Thanks for the reply
