Passport renewal

I have less than 6 months left on my passport.

Does anyone know if I can renew the passport now? I'd like to sort it now in case I get work somewhere around europe or the uk. It'll be one less thing to worry about if I have to get up and go in september or october.

I picked up the forms anyway and got the pictures done. Does anyone know if they want four separate pictures. I got four pictures but they weren't cut out. I asked the chemist if that would be ok and I was told that they cut them up themselves in the passport office.

I also have to send the old passport off, but do I have to send my birth cert also. The notes only say to send birth cert for first time applications. But nothing about renewals. Has anyone renewed their passport and sent their birth cert.

Sorry for the questions but the notes aren't clear.

Fairly sure you can renew now.
You will need to get Gardai at your local station to sign & stamp & date 2 photos.
You must send off your 'old' passport (it will be returned if requested with the corners cut off) along with your new one. No need to send your birth cert for a renewal.
Use the an post 10 day turn around service but you may need to wait more than 10 days to get it back ...

Are you missing out on 6 months that you've paid for then?

Yes you do, but I'm guessing the OP is willing to take the €4 hit assuming it's a standard 10 year passport.

Yes you can, my wife renewed hers with six months to go, and no, she did'nt have to include her birth cert.

there's no problem renewing it early, it's done all the time as a lot of places require you to have at least 6 months on your passport to go there anyway.
