    Hi,

Ive been to both the pyrenees and the alpes and used a trip and a compact. The compact was with a 12-27 and the trip was standard. To be honest both were good. The cheapest option would be to change your cass to 12-27 or something similar. i rode with a guy who used a stand set up and he pushed a few climbs!

    Hi there,
was in Alps in May with a compact, was fine for up long 10% grade climbs.

No matter what gears you have you still have to climb, as Sean Kelly said with a smirk a s I struggled on my first Wicklow 200 in 06, "no one said it was going to be easy"!

+1 on the compact + 12-27/28 combo. Had 16 from the club over in the Pyrenees the start of June and all rode that combo (with the exception of one rider on a standard, but he's an animal) and all made the top of Hautacam/Col du Tramassel, Tourmalet, Soulor/Col d'Aubisque in good shape.

Enjoy the trip, it's a real cyclists playground and I'm jealous of Velopeloton every other day after spending a week down there!
