In the process of buying a new telly.
The old mitsubishi black diamond finally calved last week so at present we're watching the portable out of the bedroom!
Checked all the usual sites..Currys, Power City etc.
Thinking of getting either a 37" or 42"plasma.
Not planning to spend any more than 750Euro.
Plasma because the screen will take a rap from the kids.

Any advice or opinion greatly appreciated.

Well if you want a plasma then it will be a 42".
Samsung PS43E450, basic plasma, only hd ready but very good value at around 450 euro or Panasonic TX-P42UT50B 3D full hd around 750 euro. The 3d glasses cost extra but will you can buy them later if you want them at all.
    Both Saorview approved.

I am in the process of getting a tv myself in this price range at the moment but to be honest personally there seems to be a large price jump in the plasmas , your either getting one for 500 ish and its just HD ready , not full hd. and not getting great reviews etc or your getting one for 900 ish thats the bees knees with a excellent picture etc.

I was trying to get one of last years panasonic plamas on clearance but they are all gone new models are up near the 1000 mark.

    I am after settling on a 42" LED sony , for €599 .

Personally if i was buying plasma panasonic are doing the best range, they are pricey but excellent tvs, usually with 5 year warranty.

Also OP sonys are going with a 5 year parts and labour warranty at the moment , handy for piece of mind like.

    €649, but not retail shop.

    To put that in comparison.

Currys sell it for €799 in Currys Ireland shops!

Yet its only €600 if you bought it off their UK website!

One for Currys over on the Curry's forum on boards to explain. Perhaps they could price match themselves per their UK price! €600 would be an excellent price.

It says available to order, im fully open to correction here, but i think off the top of my head that they are last years model and they cant be "ordered" i might be wrong. And notice its also only 1 year warranty. Vs 5 for all the new model ones . But as i said im open to correction here.

Im only saying this cause i was chasing one of last years models off currys but i just missed out and they couldnt get them again.

The Panas are lovely though my local soundstore has the entire range and most of them are drool worthy :D

it only says HD ready on their own , LG website so i would assume thats all it is , HD ready not Full HD.

Im assuming the 1080p is one of the things it accepts from bluray players and the like and converts it or whatever

I See it now at the top of that lg page, says it,s hd ready.

yup for a smaller size tv you wouldnt notice the difference but i think once you go 32" plus thats when the full HD is worth it.

The sony, is available from the sony centre or currys,

currys had it at 639 and would only price match with written proof of price
Sony centre had it at 639 and would bring it down to 599 after i pushed them for a deal :)
Currys wouldnt budge without proof of lower price nearby, if your up near dublin i believe power city may have the best price on it check it out.

I dunno about the layout of the room your putting it in, but if i was worried about a child smacking the tv i would be wall mounting it personally out of a childs hand reach.

No modern flat screen is as tough as the old crt ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 423 ✭✭wesleysniper38

yeah the old crt's could take a hit surely..

Power City look the best for value on the majority of TVs.

Anyone know much about the service they provide?

It would be great to get a telly with full hd, good fast response time, internet wifi included and iplayers etc..

but the more I'm looking the more confusing its getting:eek:

37" ---TX-L37ET5b Panasonic looks to come closest (wi-fi ready)at Power City at 809euro
but the TX-L37E5b is only 675 on offer.(needs dongle)

Is there a big difference ?

TX-P42UT50b is the 42"plasma at 749euro. This one has 3d but has it the capabilities to be as Smart as the Tx 37ET5b?

I bought the Samsung 800hz Smart 3D LED TV, before that I always had plasma, I am converted to LED now though as the picture is incredible on this TV. It also uses a lot less power than the plasma. Just my personal opinion.

the budget is 750 max, the tv your talking about retails at over €1000 usually.

Did Panasonic 5 year warranty offer end on 30th june?
just referring back to the panny 42"ut plasma that is available to order from powercity the reason that i thought it is 2012 model was that it is saorview approved, I thought (mistakenly?) that last years panny models were only irish digital ready.
You should enquire about this tv as it was launched at around 1000 euro and if you could get it for 750 it would be a very good buy, i think.
The sony led,s are excellent as well, most brand names are pretty good, but one more thing that you "must" check out on whatever tv you settle on is the sound quality. some modern tv,s have very poor speakers due to the slim cabinets and you could end up having to buy a soundbar for it. These are very good but not cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 423 ✭✭wesleysniper38

Yeah that Samsung is about 1400 I think.

You would have to love your telly for that one.

Indeed. Thats why i thought the Plasma "might" be better for sound ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭jonnygee

The Panasonic plasma sound seems to be ok as the the cabinet is moulded to accept bigger speakers, i have experience of the panny 42xt model on which the sound is acceptable, however i have also seen some led models on which the sound is not good at all.
Downfiring speakers seem to be the norm which assumes that we are all going to wallmount our tellies or is this just a marketing ploy to excuse the tinny sound.

I have the Panasonic 50ST50 and the sound is actually quite decent on it ,much better than I had read about in reviews.

I've seen many complaints around here about poor sound, slow channels changes and very slow MHEG5 text on Hanspree sets. You get what you pay for

Ok i installed the sony 42" set on fri night and have been using it since.
Have watched a few movies from bluray, and saorview for a few hours .

    Initial impressions,
Picture quality is excellent from the bluray source , literally cannot fault it, fast moving scenes etc i cant spot anything wrong myself, very impressed by it.

Sound quality , sound is crystal clear, has a good range of volume, i have it lingering on 30/100 and have gone up to 50/100 and have needed no louder. Although sound is crystal clear , it could be a little bassier for the movies, that said though i havent gone near the settings etc so im very happy so far. I dont see myself buying a soundbar anytime soon.

Saorview, im near the local transmitter so have only a crappy , "rabbit ears" indoor aerial at the moment, the tv immediately picked up all channels both digital and the old analogue. Digital channels quality is very good, but im buying a better aerial anyway as the old "rabbit ears" one keeps falling over :D

Installation simple, few screws and bolts for the stand and thats it.
5 year warranty with the sonys this month, got the email from sony with the extended warranty to print off .
Well worth the 599 in my opinion, i would happily purchase again. The only other sets i would personally consider are the panasonics if i had more money to spend.
    http://www.sony.ie/product/tv-107-42-lcd/kdl-42ex410#/Overview

I should of added this earlier but my parents purchased one of the cheaper brand lcd tvs last year. my experience with the budget brand tv lcds is as follows.
The viewing angle seriously effects you, honestly afew degrees above or below or to the side and the picture is very dark, screen really must be viewed head on only.
Remote and menus are terrible, theres no common sense to them , very confusing and thats to me i work on computers and with electronic gadgets all the time.
Sound , acceptable nothing more, if for any reason you need to turn it up alot there is some distortion.

Personlly they are fine if its for someone who just wants to watch the news and a few soaps, if you want to do any sort of any high def stuff/gaming then save your money.

Its fine for my parents as its not their main tv only a small one in the bedroom, but still i wouldnt reccomend any of the budget lcds as a main family tv
