Have they something to hide or is there a genuine reason?

some sellers try to prevent people from doing a History Check before they see the car.

    A little of A and a little of B.
Some people don't want their car cloned and some don't want you to know that it's been written off/clocked/stolen/has finance outstanding on it.
If you're genuinely interested, ring the seller and get the reg off him, if he has nothing to hide, there shouldn't be a problem.
Or check any closeups of the discs or logbook. A lot of sellers blank out the reg, but forget to do so on the paperwork.

    This ^

I always have the reg on full display because I will always more than likely have an alibi if my car did get cloned. It doesn't bother me that much. If I know that I'm in the right I will not pay any fines or anything like that and I will stand my ground.

I will also have it on display in order for people to do a check on it if they like. If there's something wrong with it that I didn't know, all the better if they ring me and tell me.

I was caught out with lemons before and it wasn't a nice feeling. I wouldn't want to put anyone else in that situation just because I'm afraid of my car being cloned.

I CAN SEE SOME FOR AND AGAINST POINTS FOR NOT SHOWING THE REG BUT THERES NO EXCUSE FOR USING FAKE NAMES LIKE "ME" "SELLER" "CAR" ETC WITH THE PHONE NUMBER BY JUST DOING THAT IT SHOWS STRAIGHT AWAY THE VENDOR HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE............

I would blank mine out because I wouldn't like the idea of anyone with the right tools finding out my address. That could pose further issues relating to social engineering. In this day and age and going forward the line between someone's personal information and public knowledge is forever getting smaller. I value my privacy and would rather give out the reg on the phone on a call by call basis and not have it available for the public domain

That sounds like a public statement issued by a civil servant:D

    Paranoid much?

Hah no not especially. It's just the principal of it. I like to choose who I give my home address to and not have it available for public

If people want to clone a common car, as is the majority of cars on DoneDeal, then you would just go to any car park.

If you think blanking out a reg when your car is for sale makes it safe, what is to stop people just taking a picture of your car? I mean, look at the parking thread for f's sake!

Also, reason why people say "ME" seller is because they don't want people to know they're selling cars, ie. the tax man. :)

I advertised a car on done deal recently for the first time. I blanked out number plate for no other reason than most advertisers seemed to do so, but did wonder why everyone was doing this.

I reckon most people who do it don't even know why they do it,they just think it's the done thing. Personally i don't see the point and have never done it.

Chances of you going to nearest car park and finding 520d e60 black are quite small. ( it involves you physically going to car park and looking for particular car )
With donedeal.ie you just enter in search 520d and you got a huge chance to find e60 in black with reg in display. You don't even need to get up from the chair.

I only sold skyline on donedeal and it had reg on display. Chences of such car to be cloned were very very very small. I had nothing to hide too, as it was going for small money, so it wasn't in perfect condition, it was declared as no tax and nct in ad too.

If I take pictures of my own cars and post them in Internet, then I try to hide reg. there are people who can get your details with just reg and find out where is your car based, so it's easy for scumbags to nick your car.
If there are other cars in the background of my car I will hide their reg too.

Ok, I'm glad I asked now. I didn't know about the cloning, never thought of the tax man linking names :pac: I was suspicious of those ads to be honest.

I did ring up about one of them and lost interest after a couple of answers! I'll have to ask for reg no's anymore.

Point taken, but most scumbags don't bother looking up cars on the internet, they just nick what they come across.

In a way yes and in a way no.

If they need car for order then it's a heaven to have car sale and enthusiast heavens. It's like shoping mall for scumbags. Modified cars are a huge target on these websites. It's profitable for them to steal those and break for parts. If they got order for aftermarket parts then finding stuff online by reg is easyer then looking in all carparks for right car.

Then again hiding reg is being safe. Atleast some basic protection. Ofc if they really really want your car, ten nothing will save it. It's a fact.
