Hope this is ok with Mods, nothing whatsoever got to do with the race. Great race by all accounts, €12 entry fee, chip timed, fast course. Course record broken last year by Boards very own Bazman and it attracted crowd of 500 or so. Done it the first year it was ran and it was a great race with flat course. Entry via RunIreland till Monday next.

Just signed up for this as my first race back after Cork Marathon.
I did it last year and it was a very good race. Prob won't be pb'ing but just want to get back to racing.
    €12 entry = great value!

Toying with the idea of heading down to this. Anyone know if they take race entries on the day? The RunIreland site says 'limited entries on the day'. Would hate to travel he 50 miles only to be turned back!

    Is it a fast course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

There's also a 5k in Irishtown that evening (Wed 11th), very flat but I believe too twisty to be very fast.

I can only speak from a plodders point of view and not your league, but its as fast a 5km course i've done. Won in 14.xx by Barry Minnock last year. Its flatter than Rathfarnham i reckon.

Flatter yes, but not faster imo due to Rathfarnham's net downhill.
This route takes in boreens and starts and finishes on Main St. Can't remember any inclines at all, just a few midges on the backroads!!

If you are in PB form then this course gives you every opportunity to deliver.

Cheers. If I'd known that, I'd have planned for it, but ah well. Perhaps next year. It's a little early to get to from work too.

Sure we're all only plodders in this game! Looks like there'll be a bit of a head-wind for the first 2km (6m/s), but dry and pretty cool (14'C).

    Free protein. Yum!

Anyone know if there's a secure area to keep bags and helmets or anyone bringing a car and have a bit of free boot space?!

Krusty - I'll have my car with me with plenty of space if you like.
There's plenty of crushed bug protein on the front grille of my car too if you want a post race recovery meal!!

It's on tomorrow night, at 7:30. I may do it myself, depending on my legs after rugby tonight.

BHAA race is also tomorrow :o
Sorry, I'm not as young as I used to be...

    I'm doing it based on being told it's a fast(er) course than last week's South O'Hanlons 5k...

Its most certainly flatter than South O' Hanlons 5k, if its faster depends on how your running i suppose.

Yes, it's fast. No hills. I ran it last year. I was going to race again tomorrow but I've picked up an injury and have to sit it out.

At one section along the back roads it gets narrow and the surface isn't great but the field is well spread out by this stage (about 3k or so).

I entered on the day last year. I think that 'limited entries' thing is just to encourage people to sign up early.

Surprisingly, it's easier and quicker to get to Kinnegad from Work (West Dublin) than it is to get to Ringsend. Will hopefully make it tomorrow evening.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,121 ✭✭✭tang1

If you check red tag timing Krusty, last years results are still available to give you an idea on how fast the course is and the standard of runners doing it.

krusty, no need for secure place for your helmet etc.
theres no crime in ireland outside dublin, unless you're coming down to take our bogs or steal our lovely septic tanks......
good luck in the race if ya do it.

So... the general consensus is that Kinnegad is a faster course than Ringsend?

Ringsend is much closer for me, I was going to try once again to get that sub 20 monkey off my back, should I drive to Kinnegad instead??
Or maybe just wait till Rathfarnham?:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭Patrick_K

    Surely Ringsend is fast too?
I don't know the exact course but I run around there the whole time and there isnt a hill to be found within miles ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

(sorry for hijacking the Kinnegad thread :o)

The BHAA race is dead flat, partly on the track and partly on the path - so from those angles it's very fast. But it's 2 1/2 laps of the track and 3 laps in the park (and final 350m on the track). There's a lot of turns, and potential for bottlenecks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,554 ✭✭✭Mr Slow

This is the description I got from a local.

    It is a great course
    - not too unsimiliar to Kilcock - flat 1st km - then a nice little down hill of about 40 meters then fast but tight road for the next 3km [heading east on this little road/boreen https://maps.google.com/?ll=53.46944,-7.111899&spn=0.004368,0.011362&t=m&z=17&layer=c&cbll=53.469458,-7.111746&panoid=T_RATIYmlZpN8ZCnT8KKHg&cbp=12,105.66,,0,0]
    - there is a slight drag at 700meters to go - then it swings back flat and a great finish on the mainstreet.

Looks like it'll be a pretty strong head-wind for the first mile, until you turn off for Riverside Lawns.

I'm living 20 mins from Kinnegad and currently no wind here, hopefully stay that way.

I always go by chip time as it might take you a few seconds to cross the line at the start, so sub 20 it is!

Another well organised local 5km so congrats to the organisers and volunteers. Great spread afterwards too and that coffee did the trick as it started to get chilly.

Course is good and fast with PB potential. Personally I found the boreen a bit boring and you needed to watch the step with the grass and some uneven parts but thats a very very minor personal thing. It would def be on radar for next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,553 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Good solid flat course, though I found the boreen difficult for entirely different reasons. The camber was a little tough in the racing flats, and any time there was loose gravel, I lost a bit of speed/traction (every second counted in the end!). Really super organization and a great price too and great to have so many familiar friendly faces at the race.

Frustrating to start in the second row though, and to have two ladies carrying water bottles and a young lad who shouldn't have been there, toeing the start line. As soon as the race started, they slowed the entire field on the right hand side, which apart from being an annoyance, was also a safety risk. We had chips and a starting mat. It just didn't make sense. I wish the organizers would publish photos of the start-line and highlight the different runner's finish times. Cruel, but would ultimately reduce the risk of a nasty accident in future.

But very happy to finish 10th and finally crack the sub 17 (second attempt). I reckon the Lecheile 5k will be a slightly quicker course once they have the new track laid, but this was a damn fine race and I'm very glad I made the extra effort to travel to Kinnegad, for those 4 seconds!

You'll be glad those kids robbed you of a few seconds in your next 5K when you're chasing your PB again

In the kids defense, they didn't have chips, and are too young to know any better. But runner 148 started in the top 10 positions in the race, and finished 10th last. I'm not sure whether this picture is any better, but at least I don't look quite as grouchy. :)

We had an argument discussion (;)) about this on this thread after the Irish Runner 5 mile: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056616922&page=9

People were saying it's something that is only confined to large races but this race is just another example of it happening in a smaller race. It's a shame but the conclusion was there is nothing you can really do about it, people will stand where they want unfortunately, just have to wait for it to thin out. Well done on the sub 17 BTW.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭wideball

I'd the same start line issues as Krusty, but used it to stop myself going off too fast. Gradually made my way up the field which is a nice way of picking targets to chase!

Managed a 25 sec PB (17:28) which improves last week's 15 sec PB (17:53), but I think I'm at my limit without more specific 5k training. Happy out.

Good race, fast course, the boreen (an Irish motorway!) was different and nice spread afterwards. Great value for €12. Well done to all who raced and organised it.

In this case pconn it was just a free for all. The loudspeaker couldn't really be heard and people approached the start line from all directions seeing as there were no barriers. I was about 8 secs crossing the line but in amongst all that were the kids (Large juniors field) who without a hope of knowing any better veered all over the place in the opening metres. And that's not to mention the old guy who shoved and pushed his way for the first 100m and then started to drift back into the crowd again!

Personally I wasn't looking for a time last night but if I was I probably would have been frustrated as a few easy fixes would have removed 80% of the problem, but ya you'll always get some examples of it no matter what!!
Also, it was closer to being a fun run than a serious race for the majority of people there (Notwithstanding the Clowns at the front!).

But runner 148 started in the top 10 positions in the race, and finished 10th last.)

I did the whole thing of looking up runner 148 in the results - and by matching surnames there is a Chipper/Diner in the town of Kinnegad by the same name...

[here it is on google streetview http://goo.gl/FyY4U]

Maybe she felt 'This is my town Clown... I am havin' my piece of the start line' :D

But you are very justified in your frustration - I am smiling at the (inverse) symmetry that you and runner #148 shared in the start/finish positions. :)

Haha. Yes I noticed that surname too, and drew the same conclusion in terms of the local establishment. It wasn't the impact on my time that bothered be, as much as the shock as the race started as there was a massive surge behind me pushing me forward, but a number of largely unmoving objects in front of me. All it would have taken was one trip, and I think we'd have seen the last of the Kinnegad 5k.

Nope, wasn't me, unless Annette Keally is in fact wideball, in which case Wideball has a bit of explaining to do.

Congrats on the sub20! Chip-time all the way!
