What are the "Unlockers" doing that we can't do ourselves?

Hi all, Just wondering what exactly is it that the unlockers are doing to generate codes and such that they sell on ebay and other places? How does it work?

Good question, I'd like to know this to but I was told by a phone store in nutgrove that these walk in shops do little more then we do ourselves by using hacks instead of unlock codes. As for the online unlockers where and how they get official unlock codes I dont know.
