Dodgy Dealer?

I am looking at buying a car on donedeal.ie. It is listed as a private sale and the contact details are up.

I called and gave the usual 'I am calling about your car on donedeal'. He replied with which one, I have two up (I then searched and found over 24 cars with his number).

His phone was an a automatic divert to a different number to the one called.

He then stated he was a trader but it would be a cash sale with no warranty.

I asked him where I could meet him and he said he has no premises but can meet me at any carpark near the M7/ M50. He said the car is registered in the previous owners name and he has the certificate. He said he would welcome any mechanical inspection.

I said I would prefer to meet him at his own address but he said that he doesn't do that and he would only meet me in a car park.

    Opinions? Run a mile?

    Car is keenly priced!!

Or do a full car check first & then bring a mechanic otherwise you pay's your money & takes your chances...Just like any other private sale really....(Only this would have alarm bells going off for me at this stage even)

But hey it just might be the bargin of the year....

It's guys like him that have the motor trade in this country in the state that it is in. Can you imagine how difficult it is for an honest garage to compete with a chancer like that when they have taxes, overheads and warranties to pay for?

A trader whether he states there's no warranty or not has to give a warranty by law if he sells to a consumer. If there is a problem after the sale he has to help put it right even if your receipt says no warranty. That's consumer law.
He can only sell a car without warranty to another trader/garage.

Apologies, let me rephrase, he stated that he buys and sells cars. He said he sources them from garages. I don't want to get into a badges of trade argument, just want to find out peoples opinions on buying a car from the description.

Even if something did happen afterwards, I wouldn't have a hope of tracking him down considering his mobile number is on divert and I have no location to find him.

Treat it as a pig in a poke. You're getting none of the benefits of buying from a dealer, and maybe he has the mechanical knowledge to screw you. :)

Unless it's very cheap and / or you have a mechanic you can bring with you then I'd trust your gut and walk away.
