Good places to walk dogs in Ireland

Thought this might be helpful for dog owners who are living in certain areas or are on holidays or just visiting somewhere for a while. We can just post up different areas where we can walk our dogs. I am based in Tipperary town and here are some of the places we use.

Tipperary Hills - an area in the town itself where there is plenty of open space and well of the road. The pathways are all tarmac and there is plenty of grass. There is a pitch and putt cousre but is never too busy. Many people walk their dogs here both on and off leash.

Dundrum Woods - located about ten minutes outside town on the Thurles road. A good forest walk that has mostly gravel paths and no hills etc. There is a lake in the centre (for dogs that like the water). The start is close to the road but then leads into quieter forest area. The area is popular with families and joggers.

Aherlow woods - Five minutes from Tipperary in the Glen of Aherlow. There are a few different routes here. On the way to Aherlow you go up a sharp hairpin bend and just at the top there are two car parks, one on the left and one on the right. The walk on the left is quite steep and rough while the one on the right is fairly level. If you wish you can go onto christ the king car park or Aherlow house and take the route through the nature park which can be a bit damp (especially with all this rain).

Cahir town/ swiss cottage - Park in the car park of Cahir Castle and you will see a monument/sculpture of a giant fish, this is the start of the walk. After a small hill it is level all the way and is tarmaced. You can go a good but beyond the swiss cottage. As you are on this route you will have the golf course on your right and just after this is quite open. The river suir is here and is quite fast moving so Id keep the dog on the leads in case he fancies a swim, I dont think a dog could manage the currents here.

Clonmel On the Waterford road there is a park with a kids playground and pathways. This is a short walk (not even a walk really) but is good if you are passing through and want to give your dog a toilet break or fresh air. At the end of the park is the river suir and again is fast moving. This area is prone to flooding so just be careful if you leave the dog off leash.

Glengarra woods - This is located on the old road between Cahir and Mitchelstown (its closler to Mitchelstown really). A quite forest area with gravel roads and paths through the forest. It is pretty quiet here too and the river is usually ok for dogs but be careful if it is after being raining a lot the river can change a lot.
