Factual Reference

I recently left a job after 9 months to go travelling. I left the job on good terms, worked my notice etc. I contacted the company on my return to ask about a reference as I am looking at some new roles but they said they only provide factual, written references. I know from experience that most potential employers like to talk to a referee from a previous employer when seeking references
I am just wondering what I should do when ask to provide a referee now?. My line manager from the previous job has since left so I have no one to ask beyond HR, who, say only will supply a written ref

A lot more companies are only doing factual references now, so it is not abnormal.

Could you try to find your ex-Line Manager's mobile number and give them a shout?
