Kindle Repair?

My first Kindle 3 was replaced just before xmas as it wouldn't turn back on, completely froze.
Amazon sent me a brand new one and was free so long as I sent it back within 30 days. Very easy to deal with.
I started having issues on the weekend with the replacement. Randomly freezing and needing to be hard reset. Now it's completely stuck.

Got in touch with Amazon and they're sending another by priority. Should be here tomorrow free of charge.

Anywho they never requested my broken one back? No mention of it when chatting to CS and no mention in the follow up emails. So my question is I'll have a spare Kindle, albeit it broken, anyone know where it could be fixed?

I'd love to pass it onto someone to get some use out of it if I could get it repaired for a smallish fee.
    It's a 3g keyboard model.

Surely they would have to explicitly state they want it back though. They can't charge you without explaining that to you.

I'll wait and see what the package contains and if no mention I'll ring a few pc repair shops to see what they can do.

fixing those kindles is really a no go. youre better off to ask them if they want it back. in most cases they'll just have you recycle it at this point.

That probably won't work as serial numbers won't match

    Feck. :(

I think Amazon are quite relaxed about the kindle replacements (they must be able to produce them for feck all :pac:). Just explain to them what happened, they may understand...

Yeah would have no problem sending it to you but for the serials not matching. They'd probably be fine with knowing it's destroyed/recycled though.

Amazon CS has been nothing but helpful anytime I've dealt with them.

I've had it open and there's no visible damage to anything on the board. Plus I know it wasn't dropped hard or got wet so it might be a software rather than hardware issue.

I might have a tinker around with it. If I can get it booted I might just be able to do some linux work with it before it freezes. That might give me an idea what causes it.

Just double check your e mail, just had one replaced this week, in the e mail regarding the replacement they sent info on sending it back with ups, they refurbish them if they can and sell them too, usually as replacements (states "another" rather than a new kindle in the mail). So id be surprised if they didn't ask for it back, as said previously maybe check with them so you don't get caught out.

Just re-read the email and the small print
There is no need to return the defective Kindle. Damaged or defective products can often be disposed of free of charge at local municipal collection points. For more information about where you can drop off your waste equipment for recycling, please contact your local city office, waste authority, approved WEEE scheme or your household waste disposal service.

So I can tinker away! :D

Actually from what I understand they are sold at or below cost, money is generated on their app store and book store. The kindle fire is, at least. not sure about the ePaper models.

    +1

The Gilette system. Sell great razors for next to nothing then charge a fortune for the actual blades :)

Not sure I get that. Google aren't really hardselling aftermarket apps. The big money for them is cracking open the ad market and user stats, no?

probably both. Heres the article I was thinking of though. The real advantage owned by Apple is they have complete authority over the interface (iPad) the Operating System, and the App Store. The reason that Android devices struggle is because it's just open source software that developed on by third party manufacturers who have little or nothing to gain in the way of content revenue after they sell the product. Which probably has something to do with why ASUS has Launched 4 tablets in a year; each of which uses an expensive, non-interchangeable keyboard dock. It's probably also why Acer has phased out of the tablet space, HP - we know where that went, and RIM are also fcuked. Toshiba is just 'meh' - it's tablets neither excite or amaze (even it's "Excite" does nothing exciting, it's just another android tablet that doesnt dare to do anything differently) and Samsung, while it's a good flagship for Android (especially with Nexus devices which are a direct google-samsung development partnership family of devices) it itself is bogged down in legal battles with Apple. HTC disappeared from the space last year too.

Interesting read. I didn't realise that margins on the iPad were tight. Makes sense when you think of it in a market dominance mindset.
