Non payment of Revenue fines

Hi I know someone who is close to me that refuses to make returns to Revenue re his business and hasnt done in the past 4 years. He wont comply with them and wont even discuss payment of the penalties and fines with Revenue. He is so ignorant and just says its alright ill just go to jail for a couple of days and that will be the debt wiped out. Now from what I gathered Revenue are stating that he owes around €60000 to them and thats just what I heard him saying casually one day so dont know the real figures.
He already got caught few years ago but paid the money owed to Revenue then and was up to date with them but then he didnt do anything since.
Im just wondering what would be likely to actually happen to him? How long in Jail would he get and so on?

A ruling last month by the Court of Criminal Appeal in the case of a man jailed for 12 years for social welfare fraud, gave future sentencing guidelines that “significant and systematic frauds directed upon the public revenue . . . should generally meet with an immediate and appreciable custodial sentence”.

He could be dealing with months, not days. Non-cooperation will likely make things harder on him.

Does doing time in jail then wipe the debt, or does the debt still remain?

It would only wipe out the fine for non filing, it would not wipe out the taxes owed. If there is no filing an assessment will be raised which might be more than the amount actually owed and interest and penalties will be added. No amount of jail time will eliminate the debt.
