Hi, when I was selecting my courses for college I seen an amination course. (I didnt applie for it) But Im just wondering is there really a demand for cartoon animaters in Ireland or would you have to go to america for a job in animation. Or how would it work?

I know an animator who does freelance design work now. You know: adverts, flash videos, corporate comics, etc. He is very self-disciplined and driven.

Is this the one in Dun Laoire which also did the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series? If so, that closed down a long time ago. Maybe 15 years ago or something.

There's no money in Animation in Ireland. Anyone who starts to even get half decent e.g. Brown Bag Films moves to America and then subcontracts a lot of the boring, tedious animation work (things that an intern, newcomer to the industry) used to do to Asia.

the poster who said versatility is the key is right. Also I'd be looking more at the VFX side of the industry, in London especially there are quite a few jobs going but the competition is fierce.

I know a good few animators (though I'm not one myself), mostly who went to IADT. Of those I know, most are finding it tough. A few used to or still have some freelance gigs coming up, one is branching out in London, but most are finding it really tough and are, basically, working on their own projects but doing anything else they can to pay the bills. One is an international animation superstar right now. Another one specialises in colour continuity in a studio.

It's a tough old world out there for animation - if you graft, spend lots of time finding a niche which you're amazing at, maybe that's one way. The scene here is incredibly tiny and most, from what I've seen, go abroad, first stop London, America seems the logical next step.

But, if you've a unique talent for it, I wouldn't say don't do it.
