    I did this recently.

The HDD I upgraded to was a 1TB Samsung. I worked a dream. If you want to search for a different HDD, just make sure that 1. it's a 2.5" SATA and 2. it's a 5400 RPM drive.

    Then follow the guides above.

Thanks guys for the advice just one question is it difficult to transfer all your data from old hard drive to the new one

You have to back up your data* to an external drive and then re-transfer it back to your new drive.

I did it with my ipod, took ages though.

If you have PS+ use it to back up your saves.

Any games you downloaded off PSN can be re-downloaded, so no need to transfer them.

*Some game saves cannot be backed up to an external drive(Demon's Souls being one).

Nice price as well, can't seem to find anything better than that.

Might be following you down that route shortly as space is also becoming an issue for me. Just need to see if all is well as the fan gets v noisy after playing for a while. Time for a vacuum and who knows - might be joining you in expanded HDD land - 1TB - nice.

It's a shame that PS3 doesn't support SSDs & Install to SSD! Would be sweet to have no loading times.

Where are you all getting the idea that SSD's don't work in the PS3? http://www.tomshardware.com/news/playstation-ps3-ssd-upgrade-loading,11811.html

May go with this myself. Any reason for going with the marketplace seller over amazon?

OK - well the wife found out. Should have known better - just moved from the laptop for a moment.
    Ah well...

In terms of the SSD - 2 things - capacity and price - otherwise I would love to get one.

Cheers OP for posting this up.

I read a big article somewhere that it messes up some games. I have no idea why a game would perform differently on an SSD, but there you go. The wonders of the cell processor, maybe. They went in dept with various games.

@price - it's gone below the €1/GB threshold now, so I bought one for the MacBook and it's definitely the best purchase I've ever made. It's astounding, to be honest!

Sorry to derail this thread but can the ps3 play MKV files?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

    No.

If you want a workaround to play them, the easiest option is: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/

That's nuts, from all I read online a while ago it wasn't possible, something about the HD was tied to the mobo of the PS3. Goes against everything I know as a comp sci student but I accepted it as everyone was saying it. Also couldn't read the PS3 format on my PC when I plugged it in via adapter!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Each PS3 encrypts its HDD so, for example, if you took a HDD from one PS3 to another, it wouldn't work. However, as you are backing up and restoring to the same PS3 with the same encryption, it works fine.

In order to copy data from one PS3 to another, you need to have both PS3's plugged in and directly connected using an Ethernet cable.

So upgraded to the 1T last night.
All went quite well - no issues.

Only thing that surprised me was that I had to install the latest firmware after turning on before being able to do anything else.
Simply downloaded from the PS site and put to the USB memory in the correct folder and away it went.

All told very happy now - nice not to worry about space for a while again.

    Cheers OP for this one.
