I was driving past the Garda boat club yesterday and noticed a white van with Garda stickers on it. Is this a speed camera van?

It was right in against the wall/bushes and there isn’t a speed camera sign on that road.

Just curious as I was doing in/around the speed limit, so it’s not a am I going to get done thread.

Garda vans can be anywhere, it's the private GATSO vans that have to be in the designated areas.

So its a Garda speed van?

Never seen one before and the way they had it right in against the wall/bushes and the look of the doors you couldn't tell it was one. I suppose thats the idea.

Yep, and over the next 2 weeks there will be plenty about, not just this Friday as reported in the news.

Heard it straight from the horses mouth.

What's so special about the next 2 weeks?

Your driving licence is special, do your best to keep it clean and points free, thats what I mean.

why all of a sudden are they making this big push, they must be down on the amount of speeding fines handed out this year and the finances need a boost.

im not buying this story of been related to road deaths,as there are many other ways of dealing with that problem.but then again this way is easy send out vans and make money.

Exactly, no new reason apart from the obvious. Already noticed the increased presence around my local.

Brilliant, more vans to enforce stupid speed limits.

On the road in question, its 60 and you could easily do 80 as there’s a fair bit of road between the village and the gate at the park.

I approach the Finglas junction of the M50 daily via north road. Always use cruise to stay under 60. So easy to speed there & a black spot for cameras.

i dont mind speed vans on roads where there is too high of speed but im am sure these will be tucked in zones to catch people doing 54 in a 50.

why do the Gardai not educate drivers starting in the secondary schools, and also to work with all other road users in reducing speed and having a more safe manor on the roads.and police the roads without this objective of gathering cash.

as far as i can see the Gardai/Government's attitude on this is you'll learn your lesson when your hit in the pocket

Unfortunately that is the the only way that most irish drivers will learn. There's 3 people I know who will constantly do 80 - 100 in a 60 zone which is a small village for example. No amount of anybody telling them otherwise has made a difference.

1 of them got caught and had points and a fine. They now slow down to 60 in 60 zones.

Why now? Reason, because road deaths are up on last year's figures & they are putting resources into the next few weeks to reinforce getting the message across to drivers to slow down!!! (Also is a PR exercise as they have to be seen to do something)

Some drivers have also become complacent again & are not getting the message.

N4 out of sligo y/day evening, marked garda car was hidden around a corner on the dual carriageway to catch the everyday speeders...
I'd imagine it was fairly successful too as it's not a usual spot for them.

I think the Garda vans can still only capture front license plates?

Wrong, i got snapped at the rear driving away from a Garda Van.

What gets me is the trick of hiding them, ok you’re not meant to be speeding, but why hide them.

Herself told me about a car parking in someone’s drive on a back road into Navan and doing people as they went by. Also the old trick of on a bend, beside a speed camera sign as you come up a hill or in the entrance to a field at the gate.

If there were proper speed limits and signs then some people wouldn’t speed, 100-80-100 or 80-60-80 in a blink of an eye. Or making a perfect road slower, pushing people onto a new motorway, the road to Navan being one.

Are you sure it was a Garda van? or was it maybe a GoSafe van? I've had a look and never noticed any camera equipment pointing out the front of a Garda van.

the old Gatso vans could only monitor one direction at a time.
The old gatso vans have all been decommissioned.

The new Robot-Multanova vans (since 2008) can monitor multiple lanes in both directions.
(providing there isnt a barrier separating the lanes ie. a concrete divide on a motorway)

By the Garda boat club do you mean the one just past the Phoenix Park? If so, is there any chance it was just a van being used to transport stuff to the boat club?

    Yes , Islandbridge

I wouldn't say so , theres a car park and this was past it and parked up like it wasn't going to be moved soon .

Ah okay, just when you said you were driving by and saw it I assumed you meant it was either in the car park or just outside.

So the deaths this year are up on last year? What's an acceptable number of road deaths per year?

    0, obviously.
