Hi i want to connect a good quality speaker directly off my flat screen LCD TV, the TV is mounted on a chimney and i have a speaker cable from the TV to the chimney corner at floor level and then ran to the back of the room hanging from the ceiling. My question basically is can i connect a good speaker directly from the TV or do i need to wire it through an amplifier first, if so what type of amplifier for one speaker or where could i purchase such an amplifier/speaker.
    many thanks

You cannot connect a speaker directly to a TV like that. All the audio out feeds on the TV are line level , and must be sent through an amp.

Any other method can only be called Jerry rigging at best , and will almost certainly damage the TV to some extent.

The solutions you can use depend on your budget , and also depend on the model of the TV and what kind of audio outputs it has.

Its hard to advise without that information , but usually , for the kind of situation that you are in , most would go with some kind of soundbar, which should look well mounted under your TV and doesn't have to cost the earth.

What do you mean by speaker cable? I'm not aware of any TVs with direct speaker terminals so I presume you mean a stereo phono cable or an optical/ coaxial digital cable. There are many options available but we need to know exactly what cable you've run and what sound you want ie. stereo or surround.
