Overtaking on the test

Hi, just wondering if anyone can tell me is it ok to overtake buses that have pulled into a stop on the test? Or should I just hold back until they take off again? Not sure in terms of visibility if overtaking them is acceptable or not...

Also what about cars that are going particularly slowly, or would the instructor expect you to hold back unless they tell you to overtake?

It's all about making good progress. If you're sat behind a stopped bus on a wide road for a long time, with nothing coming the other way, they may mark you down. If you do overtake a bus, be sure to be seen to check that there isn't anyone crossing in front of the bus and leave a big space between your left side and the buses right.

If there is a slow car, use common sense. If there is a clear road with no side roads or estates connected to it and the car in front is at snails pace, then use the mirror-signal-mirror-manoeuvre and overtake at a steady pace. Just apply common sense and you'll be fine.

Don't overtake if the car is anywhere near the speed limit, or if the road isn't wide open and perfectly visible/straight.

If a bus driver indicates right at the bus stop, I believe you are expected to let him proceed rather than overtake him.

Where are you doing the test. If you're doing it in Dublin for example, it is unlikely that you'll be brought on any 80km/100km roads so the need to overtake another car probably won't arise. However, if you do find yourself on a rural National road/ (urban) dual carriage-way you can overtake them no bother.
