Do I have any options?

    Hi there,

I have a bit of a problem which I'll try to outline. I attended university for one year several years ago. I had to drop out after my first year due to problems with finances: going to college was too expensive for me at the time.

I'd really like to return, specifically this September. I applied to the CAO in January and I'm fairly comfortable with my points situation; I'll get into my number one course without issue.

I've been on Jobseekers Allowance for the past 10 or so months and I am eligible for the Back to Education Allowance, as far as I'm aware. My problem is with my fees. Since I've done first year before I'm not eligible for free tuition for that year. The fees are something like €5766 for the course I'd like to do, including the registration fee. I have absolutely no idea where I'd get this money. Since I live in a rural area work is hard--if not impossible--to come by. Commuting to find work, or living away from home to find work, has proved pointless over the past two years. The costs involved in commuting or living away from home have just devoured any savings I've attempted to make.

Is there any option for me? Anything at all? Getting back to college this September seems impossible at this stage as I'll never be able to gather the funds. My last ditch attempt is to ask for advice here. I'm not expecting somebody to give me a miracle answer, but you never know.

    Thanks.

i paid my fees in 2004 as first year student but droped out before xmass and worked every year since

i reapplied for college and started in 2010 and i only had to pay the reg fee !

OP when did you drop out?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thank you both for your replies.

W86indow: I wasn't aware of that 5 year rule. It'd be another few years before I could avail of that, though. But thank you for the information.

mango salsa: I dropped out in May '10, so a little over 2 years ago. Not long enough ago to avail of what W86indow mentioned above.
