Can ortho get rid of tooth decay?

About to get braces on next week, getting seperaters first.

I had a few questions I was hoping someone could advise me on:

    1. I read on the Irish ortho website that I should get interdental brushes and also use a small headed toothbrush and mouthwash.
I'm just a bit unsure of how small they mean though? Can anyone advise me on this? And is there anything else anyone would advise me to get ?

    2. I've been to my ortho and dentist a total of four times in the last month gettin ready for this and nobody said anything about any tooth decay etc but I've since noticed some dark marks on the biting surface of a couple of my back teeth which I'm assuming must be the beginnings of tooth decay? I'm going to ask my ortho about this when I'm in next but I just wanted to get an idea of what can be done first.

Basically does it sound like something he could scrape off for me? I asked if I should get my teeth cleaned before the braces but he said there was no need as he will give them a polish before the braces, would it be normal for him to sort this out then perhaps?

My teeth aren't in too bad shape, but since I'm investing so much time and money into them now I really want to make sure I do it all the right way!

Cheers to anyone who can help!

The orthodontist/assistant will explain how to clean the braces once they are in place. If not,ask to be shown.
The dark marks could simply be stained fissures....if you attended your dentist specifically for a checkup(as opposed to just ortho extractions), should be ok.
A bit of faith?! (plus, you're paying for a service- avail of it;) )

I think the ortho provides you with the interdental brushes or if not you can get them in the chemist. I would advise brushing after every meal and food tends to get caught and smells not very nice! Alse just be prepared for them to be quite sore for the 1st few weeks. Sorry I'm not much help but I had them for 4 years and it is well worth it in the end! Best of luck :)
