Lads, looking for a bit of advice please.

I recently rattled my left front tyre through a crater of a pothole and burst the tyre. No problem there, got that sorted. However, the ABS warning light came on, so I threw her in to the garage to get checked out (plus I have the NCT coming up soon). Garage are after quoting me €175 for a new ABS Sensor (not including labour). Does this sound right? Theyre going for €70 on micksgarage. Or could I be missing something here?

I could really do with keeping the €100 difference ;) the car is a 2.0L Avensis D4D. Any advice greatly appreciated.

What did the garage say when you questioned the difference in price?

€100 labour? That's taking the piss...better off buying the car from Mick's and getting an indy to install it.

I didn't question the €100 difference because when he quoted me the price of €175 I hadn't checked it online, only did that after. And he said the labour would work out at another €25 odd + vat.

Well I guess you won't be going back to him :)

170gbp for a wheel sensor on a 2004 accord, from honda.

i got one elsewhere for 70quid, also genuine part.

I guess you can shop around but they seem expensive for what they are.

but don't go skimping on them.

    20/30 min's to change a sensor.

you also need to clear the abs, traction control lights that come on.

ABS sensors are expensive for a what is a simple component, £90 for a pattern one for a Defender. The lights go out on some once the fault goes away, others may need to be plugged in.

Would this do the job if I ordered it and got it fitted by an indy? I don't want to skimp on the job but I don't want to spend more than I have to!

its bosch , should be fine.

should be 30min max labour, you could get charged also to get your lights reset.

make sure your brakes work after, take it for a spin and slam the brakes to feel the abs kicking in.

Is the part being quoted for by the garage the same brand etc as the one on mick's garage? Are they quoting for a main dealer part or a spurious part?

You have to know if you are comparing like with like before you complain about the price difference.

Not that I'm assuming anyone cares, but I ended up getting the part from Micks Garage for €70 and paid my local indy €30 to fit it. Saved me €125 quid all in, it goes to show that it pays to shop around! :)

Glad to hear you got it sorted but it still isn't fair to assume that the garage was ripping you off. There are different brands and quality of aftermarket parts like most things.

You could say you went to a mercedes garage and they gave you a price for 'a car', you then got a much cheaper price for 'a car' in a Kia garage.

Yeah that's fair enough, I take your point, but the way I'm looking at it is that the part I got was Bosch, there's no way it was worth €100 less than the genuine Toyota part (which is what I'm assuming he got). There had to have been a substantial markup. At the end of the day i just wanted the job done without getting it up the backside pricewise.

At least you got a good quality part. Unfortunately, with main dealers, its not about how much the part is worth, its how much they charge for it.
