Start off by test driving anything you think might possibly suit, then come back and tell us what you liked/disliked and why.

Ya i suppose that would make some sort of sense. :D Driving the parents Golf at the moment so have a fair idea what they're like. What's the craic with test drives? I take it you have to hand over some money before dealers let you sit in one ya?

Jesus, no - don't ever hand over a penny until you're sure that you want the car and you've had a mechanic examine it for you. You just ring up and book a test drive, there's no obligation.

First of all, do you have a full license or a driver's permit? I doubt any garage would leave you test drive a car if you don't have a full license, for insurance reasons. In that instance bring someone with you who has a full license (preferabley someone who knows a bit about cars) and get them to test drive it with you in the passenger seat.

Actually either way, bring someone who is well used to dealing with car dealers, they are a tricky sort and will spot a nooby straight away. What's good for them to selll you might not be what's good for you to buy.

    Read through this:

It's spot on, I used all the tips in it when I bought my car last month.

Sorry for resurrecting this post but finally found a car I'm hoping to purchase by the weekend.

Seems like a decent car, been to see it already. Seems like a mint of a car even though there's a few scratches. Didn't test drive but will do at the weekend. Dealer says there's a 1 year warranty plus road side assistance.
Just wondering is the asking price a bit steep for this particular year or could I barter down? Also, does anyone know if there's any underlying problem with this particular model of car?

Are the foglight surrounds supposed to be painted? Kinda makes alarm bells ring for me

The grill up front isn't original also, I'd presume its just someone modding the car slightly rather than trying to cover up damage.

Wouldn't have noticed the fog lights surrounds till you mentioned it. Thanks for pointing that. The grill is a custom I reckon because there's a custom badge attached to the grill to the right side, didn't note the brand though. Forgot to mention I did a motorcheck on it and it's coming back clean. Should I even bother or better off else where?
